Duck lost their companion

I had 2 Rouen ducks. My kids went and put them to bed last night. When we got up this morning to let them out it looks as if something opened the sliding door and dragged one of them out of their house and over the top of the run. The surviving duck is acting very sad and won’t come out into the run. I am at a loss at what to do.

So very sorry for your loss.
Your remaining boy is probably still in shock from the attack. If you haven't already, check him over in case he was injured as well. Make sure he has plenty of fresh water and food and try not to further stress him out.

Lots of people are rehoming or selling adults this time of year but getting a few ducklings and raising them in close proximity to your remaining duck will also work if you can't find any mature birds. I'd recommend getting 2 new additions in case something like this happens again in the future and you aren't left with a lone duck.

If you are positive the ducks were locked up properly and someone didn't mistakenly forget to lock the door, you may want to look at adding more protection to your coop. Raccoons are capable of opening simple sliding locks and once they've found a food source they will keep returning.

I think it happened really early this morning before my husband went to let them out. He does have some scratches so I went a tractor supply and got some stuff for him. We are pretty sure everything was closed up pretty tight. So I think it was accessed on the sliding door that didn’t have a lock. For now he is in the other run with our chickens until we can extra predator proof it he seems to be doing ok with them and he’ll be sleeping in the house at night for now. I’m gonna start looking for adult ducks once we get everything more safe.

Be careful keeping a drake with chickens. If he attempts to mate them he can seriously injure and even kill the hens.

It’ll only be til the weekend. We are going to fix everything in the enclosure and the coop so this doesn’t happen again
