My Sunday afternoon project- I made a 6’x2’ duck porch. I already have a 2’x3’, but with 45 ducks it doesn’t hold enough buckets especially with ice build up this winter.
I started by building a 2’x6 foot frame from 2x4s with 5 braces inside the frame. Covered that in vinyl coated hardware cloth using poultry staples. I used treated 4x4 for the front supports, for my barn I needed them 40”. Once all that was ready, I had an assistant help hold the floor to the barn, screwed it in, and added the front posts and screwed the frame to those.
Once that was up, I made the front wall out of a closet door we had in a shed. For the roof, I cut an old 2x8 diagonally and screwed it to the barn and front support posts. Then I screwed the top half of the other closet door into those supports. Since it’s a hinged door, it serves as the opening to get water in.
On one end I used chicken wire to enclose it, the other end I used plywood and made a door but I plan to change that out when I have more time.
It is NOT predator proof as I made it. Or water tight. That was not my goal. It is inside a secure fence that is occupied by the goats and livestock guardian dog. The roof is an experiment to see if it stays cleaner letting some rain in.
