Duck Run Flooring

I’m new to owning ducks and am still trying to figure out the best flooring for my ducks. They are going to be kept on my side yard and will have plenty of space (10’x8’ or so). I’ve heard sand is an affordable and effective option for the duck run and would be great for drainage considering it rains a lot where I live. I went ahead and bought the sand. Recently, I’ve noticed it’s been getting a little smelly, especially when wet. Maybe there is a way to reduce the smell? I’m still open to changing the flooring to something else ( I can’t let them free range in the grass because we have a garden we don’t want eaten and we have dogs). I don’t want our side yard to smell bad for the sake of us and our neighbors. Let me know any suggestions!
