I had to put them in a pen while collecting hatching eggs, because the hens didn't want to lay in the same spot everyday.

I had some wild Mallards fly in and land near my flock this winter. It was just shocking how much bigger the Appleyards are. They are great eating, too.

Are they faster maturing?

Dunno. I've never raised mallards. I processed mine in teh 8-10 week range and I had 3.5-4.0 lb ducks in the freezer. God, I love duck.
