Duck with eye injury

I just had this problem with one of my ducks a few days ago. First three days I tried what you did (kept her inside, washed out her eye several times, removed the white stuff with a cottonswab which I first cleaned with boiled water) without any improvement. Luckily I found a vet who was willing to prescribe an ointment. This was the first time ever a vet wanted to do something for my ducks so I was really happy... After two days ( today) she is completely herself again #blessed!

Good luck with your Duck! Do you know if she still can see trough that eye?
She doesn’t open that eye at all. When I have her in my arms she will open her eye lid and I can see her inner eyelid is covering her eye. Very rarely will she open the whole thing and her eye looks a little cloudy. I think she can see out of it when she does open it, but not very well. Not to mention it probably hurts to open it. I’m glad to hear your duck has recovered! It gives me hope!

The ointment I got was called Cavasan and contained chlooramfenicol 20mg and Vitamin A 15.000 I. E.

I'm not sure if it is available in the USA because when I searched if it was safe for ducks, it said something like this about the oral / i.v. version as it can have some serious side effects in poultry/waterfowl. I searched because the vet was not specialised in ducks and didn't want to kill my duck instead of trying to help.

Now I know, overhere the cream version is available and many of my duck keeping friends use it when there are eye problems because it is so effective. (just incidentally and for a short time).
It is used for dogs, cats and humans too they said...

Hopefully your Duck improves soon. Keep us updated

I appreciate everyone’s tips and advice! I have flushed and medicated her eye a few times today. This afternoon when I inspected her eye it was open, but very cloudy. I’m nearly positive her eyesight is gone. I will still treat her eye to prevent any infection. I’ve attached an updated picture.

Awwww poor sweetheart actually it looks better than before and IF it’s a blind eye she can do just fine with the other eye, my blue runner is still doing well. ❤️❤️❤️ and she’s beautiful 😍

I think it looks a lot better also! I feel bad that she is at a disadvantage when I throw treats out to them, but hopefully she will adjust! I’m glad to hear your duck is doing well with a similar situation. Thank you so much ☺️

Tossing treats on the ground hasn’t slowed my two down. My Fawn and White runner who’s blind in one eye can find the bowl
The treats are in so she just helps herself. She’ll also find them on the ground it will be an adjustment but she’ll do it. Just happy to hear your duck is looking better. Keep up the good work on getting her through this.

It’s day 3 of attempting to heal my ducks eye. In my opinion, it looks worse. She also is limping today and is shaking her head a bit. I think she is having trouble adjusting to seeing out of one eye only and is running into a lot of obstacles. I just really hate that I don’t know how this all happened in the first place.

i know it’s so hard to see them suffering. I’m going to add some photos on here of pictures I took of my ducks eye when she went through the similar problem at first her eye was just bubbly and I started using Terramycin and then her eye was bloody I think the Terramycin makes the vision foggy, and she walked into a stick and made her eye worse. then it went through several different stages of looking weird before it’s settled into just the gray eye and there’s also a picture of her other eye(her good eye) for reference I’m hoping that pictures help you see that eyes can go through all kinds of injuries and weird stages and end up OK although she is blind in that eye it doesn’t seem to bother her anymore

Thank you so much for sharing your photos. It does put me more at ease seeing what happened with your duck. How long do you think it took before you felt the need to treat the eye was no longer necessary? Poor girl is traumatized every time I grab her, but I do give her a generous serving of peas after each cleaning.
