I came outside to find one of my white and blue runners was chewed by a rat I'm guessing? One of her legs is totally out of commission, apparently from some really deep bites and there's about a silver dollar sized spot under her wing that has had all the feathers and skin chewed off. I really don't understand how this happened because I'm pretty sure there wasn't a rat inside the enclosure, and it's totally lined ceiling, floor and walls with 1/4 inch hardware cloth. Rats have been tunnelling under the hardware cloth that's lining the floor which explains the bites on her leg, but the one's on her back are pretty mystifying. Equally mystifying is why she would just sit there and endure such pain. I'm interested in any similar experiences and thoughts about what might have happened and why. I'm more urgently interested in ideas for wound care.
