Hi. I have a Khaki Campbell Drake named Roger, and he is suffering from prolasped penis. I took him to the vet and they treated it with cold water, disinfectants, etc and pushed his penis back in then stitching it up to keep it in. They also gave me some antibiotics to give him. After we took him home a few hours ago, he just stands in one spot, not eating anything, just drinking. I did some research to see if anyone else's drake got stitched up instead of trimmed and found one. The person said after the stitches got pulled out, he prolasped again and it got worse. They said the chances of him surviving was slim to none and they even did a bunch of vet stuff that's out of my price range. I'm very devastated to read that and also VERY angry that the vet didn't tell us. They should've trimmed that damn thing. I even cried thinking that Roger has a high chance of not making it, even though I only had him for around a year, he was very close to me and we always snuggled together. Can someone please tell me if the information I found was true and if Roger is gonna make it? This is very important to me.

Roger looks very sweet! Each spring, their penis falls off and they grow a new one. I was reading online that if your duck prolapses, you can try to take care of it, or just leave it because a new one will grow.

That put some ease in my mind, thank you. But is it normal for usually noisy ducks to stay quiet because of this? thanks :D

That's actually fake I believe. @Ravynscroft (the best expert at ducks) told me that.
It's like your teeth- you will never get new ones so look after your ducks penis properly! (Lol)

Here is a usesful post from @Miss Lydia (hope you don't mind me using this)

Okay here is quite a few threads about it https://www.backyardchickens.com/newsearch?search=prolapsed+penis

How does it look and have you done anything yet?

I'd get him into a clean tub of water let him wash real good so you can look at it to see how much damage is there. If it isn't very swollen you can try KY Jelly or Vaseline to put on it and try and push it back inside. If it stay out and dries out it can become infected and you could lose him if a vet doesn't see him. You also need to keep him on clean bedding towels would be better so shaving etc doesn't stick to it. And keep him away for the females till it is back in for good and healed usually a couple weeks or more.

Keep him isolated and away from any females... no, trimming it is only ever done if it has gotten too damaged or seriously infected, as it can effect their ability to fertilize in the future... stitches can work just fine if the prolapse is fixable, the amount prolapsed, length of time prolapsed, damage, etc are all factors in success...

If he is doing well, then don't stress overly on it... raw, unprocessed honey and coconut oil are good to have on hand in case of additional issues...

Yes, being quiet would be normal... and calm is something you want to encourage right now... limited activity and excitement to give the stitches and the prolapse time to heal and remain back in place...

Sorry, but that is absolutely false... they only have one in their entire life... if it's gone, then it's gone...

I wouldn't say best expert, but I do know that is completely false... ;)
