Duckling Diaries: the Life and Times of a Welshie Trio

Wow! I came back and everyone except Ralphie (who I pointed the baby mink at) blew up.

Believe me, if there were any here, they'd be hung by the tails all around my fence line as a warning to others! Nobody gets to mess with my ducks. We have never seen anyone from the weasel family and neither has anyone else around (there are some people with chickens near us who would surly know about weasel relations. Supposedly this general area of Montana has Minks, Fishers, Least Weasels, Short tailed Weasels, River otters and Martens. I think we may not have any in our immediate area due to there being LOTS of owls, hawks, eagles, foxes and coyotes. (Who also dine on mice, voles, gophers, marmots, rabbits, hares and muskrats) So they probably would seek a place with a bit more cover. I guess we luck out (I hope) that the bigger predators (that are easier to block) take care of the smaller ones.

Was going thru folders of pics from 2-3 years ago, and found pics of my 1st two sets of ducks.

I took them from my neighbour's broody ducks, raised 'em over the summer and gave them back to her for winter. She has such a bad snapper problem that only one out of hundreds of ducklings made it to adulthood that wasn't snitched and raised by humans.... They were super skittish, but grand fun for a while.
