Hi everyone, I'm new to hatching ducklings and I have 5 eggs currently in the incubator. However I'm a bit worried because they look different to the pictures I can find on the internet. I have 4 eggs that are half red and half white, but there is movement and the black 'dot' seems to get bigger each time they are candled (I'm presuming this is the embryo). The 5th egg has now got a small black dot too. Please could someone advise if they think these are viable from the photos (They are the best I could get!)? Thank you!

Generally in good eggs there's the air cell at the fat end, and the rest first develops veins that the dark spot, than the whole bunch slowly gets darker. The air cell enlarges a bit but stays on the fat end. Since the contents of your eggs appears to be on one side I don't believe they are good, but I always wait longer to be sure. Candle in another week to see if it's different or not.

So in the end I left the eggs in the incubator and I can now say we have four very healthy mallard ducklings!!! We kept seeing some movement in the eggs so didn't have the heart to switch the incubator off and I'm so happy we didn't:D

As, they are so cute. I'm glad you remained hopeful. Did all the original eggs pictured hatch?

Yes all the eggs hatched :D we did worry as the air sacks didn't quite look the same as all the photos and pictures we'd looked at online.
