Could anyone tell me whether this is the start of a drake tail feather ???

Doesn't look like a drake feather to me.
I have two drakes, their tail feathers are small and slightly curved upwards. I think you have a female.

I agree my drakes curly feather is very distinct from the moment it showed up. I’d say female.

By that age you should be able to voice sex them accurately.
Quiet, raspy voice is male. Loud quacks are female, though some don't do it often.

I'd go with the voice sexing. That duck looks plenty old enough to be able to tell from the quack or froggy sound. Some don't get a drake feather right away. I had one runner that was ALL drake but never did have a drake feather.

I don't see any drake feather also, but it does kind of look to be a Muscovy so the voice sexing wouldn't work the same way. Maybe give us a full body photo?

Loose feather. Is that a Muscovy?

It’s a 9 week old Cayuga duckling. This feather just popped up a couple of days ago, and hasn’t dropped since - as I had assumed it was maybe a lose feather. I have voice sexed them and thought they were both girls
