Duckling hatching question

You're right, any slick type of flooring can cause spraddle leg. But it could have been caused by something completely different, it's hard to say. Since it is already spraddled it will need the legs taped but a good non-slip flooring will help so the others don't develop this.

We had a duckling that was goofy when it hatched. didn't stand upright, kept falling to the side. I kept it seperated from the others at first gave it a day or two. I thought it had sprattle leg at first, but with time it improved on it's own. Walks just fine. This duck however did get angel wing later on. Don't know if there could be a relation or not. Hope your duckling improves!

The incubator where he hatched had paper towels on the bottom. The chicks do just fine - never had a problem. But this little guy - I don't know. I used a bandaide last night to make hobbles and put him in my brooder which has wood shavings. This morning the bandaide was undone so I'll do it again. Will he be able to get to the feed & water??

Anyway more duckling supposed to hatch today...I hope they all land on their feet!

Thank you for all the help.

I really want this little guy or gal to make it!

Well it's been about 30 hours since "Scooter" hatched. I made hobbles out of a band aide for his spraddle legs. He seems to manage to get from point a to point b but not walking. He does get legs under him and then sometimes they both go out behind him. Is this normal for spraddle legs? Does it just take lots of time before he get the strength to actually stand up? I am getting really attached to this little duck and don't want a negative outcome.

Has anyone else dealt with this in duckling? If so, what was your experience?

Thanks.

It sounds similar to what I faced with my crippled duckling--but that's not to say you won't have a better outcome. His legs at first were stretched out all the way behind him. After a few hours, he had one foot up under him and by the second day could shove himself around the brooder like that. The next day, he had the second foot up under him but couldn't actually walk. Eventually, he could walk--a little--but it never got much better than that--he has always stumbled around and has grown much more slowly than the others, presumably due to the fact that it takes much more effort for him to get back and forth between feed and water--even if they are right next to each other, he has to work harder just to stand and turn around.

He is still a crippled little duckling at two weeks of age. I just yesterday decided to try the band-aid spraddle-leg remedy, although for him I had to use a stick wrapped well in band-aids as the in-between thing. It seems to help him a lot--he is walking much more normally and not stumbling around so much. He had been tripping over his own feet because his legs were turning inward. He seems to appreciate the improvement.

BUT... I don't have high hopes for him in the long term. I intend, within reason, to continue to give him assistance and an opportunity to get better. But I expect he will never be fully healthy and hearty and I will be very surprised if he survives to adulthood.

I hope you have a better outcome. I know others have, and that is why I even tried to begin with. There is certainly hope. If not, just remember that you have already given him more than he could have expected in nature. I know my little Chance has had a fairly happy life and if it has to end earlier than we would prefer, at least he has had this much and I know I've done my best by him.

Good luck. Let me know if the spraddle-leg remedy works for him. I'm curious how much improvement my little Chance will show as a result of it.

oh, i'm sorry to hear that heather, i wish he'd better soon.

you must feed him with lots of nutritious feed, like vit, calci, prote and other to make sure he'd better soon.

thought I would unbind his legs today and try letting him swim in the sink. Obviously I'll help him but thought this might encourage him to use his legs and help strengthen them. Can't hurt to try. I'll put the hobbles back on after his swimming session & if he does well I'll do it a few times a day.

Also he is eating non-medicated chick starter - Purina. I think that's all we have out here in San Diego County. Plus he's in with 4 chicks to keep him company. I've raised baby ducks on this feed before & they did just fine.

He's just so cute!

Thats sounds like a very good idea to strengthen his leg muscles by swimming

If it works let me know i'm new to ducks as of this year and will need to know this for my future ducklings.

Does this happen offen with ducklings? I want to hatch some next spring. Does it have to do with size of egg, how many times you turn?

Scooter can swim! I am going to try this three times a day and it should strengthen his legs. His left looks better - he's keeping it under him. His right is still out to the side a bit. But he's making progress and I am happy. Here's a few pictures.
