So one of my ducklings pipped internally yesterday around noon I’m guessing and I decided to check on her since I’m using a homemade incubator and I noticed that she’s still in the exact same way she was yesterday with just the tip of her bill in the air sac and it doesn’t look like she’s made any progress at all whatsoever, plus I haven’t heard any cheeping. where she pipped is right against the shell and I’m wondering if I should maybe make a tiny hole in the shell and check on her to make sure she’s not too big to hatch on her own or that there’s something wrong since she is a cross bred of a white crested hen and a blue Swedish drake. She is alive, I can see her moving her bill a bit. Any experienced hatchers got any tips or advice for me? This is my first time doing this with ducks and I’d greatly appreciate the help

what day is she on?
If you listen close, and tap the shell gently, can you hear tapping or chirping inside? If not, I would wonder whether she has pipped through the membrane or just shadowing.
Ive only hatched successfully once, two duck eggs 4 days apart. One was assisted. And both shadowed the air cell days before pipping internally. Shadowing is when they push their beaks up against the membrane, it stretches the membrane and sometimes it appears like they've pipped when they haven't

its worth mentioning that some ducklings are just quieter, too

She is on day...27 I believe, I wonder if I may have accidentally set the humidity too too low since the air sac looks really big and I’m wondering if she’s been shrink wrapped or something and yeah, I can hear the faintest of tapping

Do you have a hygrometer? What's the reading?
The air sac does drop quite a bit, a little down the side, just before hatch. What's the temperature at?

temperature is currently at 98.9 since I had to adjust it because it somehow went up to 100.7 last night. And I honestly forgot you needed to have a reader for humidity when I set this clutch since my dad has done ducklings just like this before and they all hatched fine. Yes, there is the faintest sound of tapping but no peeping at all

if you can hear tapping I would say she has internally pipped then. If it has been over 24 hours you may want to consider making a safety hole, have you read the article on assisted hatching? There are two on this forum, one I found very helpful. Not sure how to link it here! Other more experienced hatchers may offer better advise here.
@Miss Lydia @HollowOfWisps
any advice?

I’ve been hearing tapping for almost a day and a half so I think I’m gonna make a really small hole for her so she can breathe. I am concerned she might be too big for her egg since the hen lays small eggs

Think that’s a good idea to go ahead with with?
Not certain, if you're sure shes internally pipped for over 24 hours, and can hear tapping, then I would say go ahead with a small safety hole. Do you know how to make one? Candle the egg to ensure the duckling isnt in the way, I would use a very thin drill bit and just twist it very gently, not much pressure, you dont want to jab the duckling inside. It should gradually break through the shell, just a very very small hole, pin sized almost. Then leave the egg back in the incubator, without turning it as this woild disturb the baby who is in hatching position. Then just be sure you keep it humid. It's difficult since you dont have a hygrometer, but you could add a damp cloth to the incubator, not touching the egg, and this will hopefully give the humidity a boost if you're worried its too low.
I'm hoping one of the others will join the discussion and offer advice, but I think this is the right course of action
