Hello, I have a duckling who is not putting any weight on one of its feet. He's walking on the ball before the leg. We had an older duckling in there when I put him in there after he hatched. I don't know if he stepped on his foot wrong or what. Can someone please help me? What can I do for him?

Thank you.

How old is this duckling? are they doing okay together? Are you giving your ducklings niacin along with their feed. Or nutritional yeast? You may want to put this duckling in his own lil space in the brooder and give it some times to recoup if an injury that way they can still see each other but the injured one won't get stepped on any more.

I took out the older duckling. The duckling not walking on his foot was born at/towards the end of last week. I've been feeding them Dumor Chick Starter/Grower 20%. No ma'am I haven't given them niacin or nutritional yeast. He's in with a little older duckling but not as big as the one I took out, a duckling that was born before/around the same time as him, and a chicken biddie.

Thank you.

One of our ducklings that we ordered from Meyers last summer was a runt and grew significantly slower than her "sisters" and after the "big ducks" reached a certain size point, they ran her over all the time because apparently anything smaller than they were didn't exist. (I had to get a heavier food dish for them then because they keep flipping it over by running over it too.)

It happened so many times that her leg was either sprained or broken and she walked like you are describing or she would kind of army crawl using her wings. Definitely do what Miss Lydia says (always do what Miss Lydia says - she is amazing!) and separate her from the bigger duck.

I'd start them on some B3 which is niacin water fowl need alot more than what chick feed can supply and if they get def they can become lame or have neurological problems or both. This maybe and injury but they still need the B3. Niacin is easy to use not always easy to find you want plain niacin not flush free or time released. That would be in dosage 150mgs per gal of water mixed and put into what ever waterer your using or getting Nutritional yeast food grade and using 1 tablespoon per cup of feed until 10 weeks old. This is very important since this is when they are growing so fast.
Some good info here. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/750869/raising-and-caring-for-ducklings#post_10611711

I have a duckling that has that same problem but the Vets in my area want payment up front or they wont see him. I started him on niacin suppliments and he is doing a bit better but this is a picture of what he looks like and how he walks. A Vet tech said it sounds like his hip may have went out and isn't a nutritional problem. The duckling is Welsh Harlequin drake and is 1 week and 3 days old.

@DianaG59 you could probably tell by feel if his hip is out. Or gently lay your duckling on it's back in you lap and pull very gently both legs down so they are side by side do you notice any difference in either leg? Keep up the niacin make sure it's plain niacin and not flush free or time released. How is the other leg? you might want to think of may putting hobbles on your duckling for a few days and see if that helps him hold his leg normal. First though check out those legs.

I tried putting hobbles on him and he panicked and flopped around like a fish. He is standing more since I started giving him brewers yeast in his food. I checked out his leg and both are the same size no swelling onthe hock or the leg.
. I have seen where you can help push the tendon back in by naturally stretching out thier legs back like they normally stretch. I dont feel like his hip is out as both feel the same. Feet are boththe same color but his foot on the the affected foot he can't move the toes that well.

Dear Miss Lydia:

This is the only duckling that this has happened to. I'm using a round plastic container that has a base to it. How often would I have to change the water with the niacin in it because the waterer I'm using isn't a gallon? How do you use the niacin? Do you shake the container with the pill in it until it dissolves?

If you don't mind will you please look at this website at this niacin please? https://www.walmart.com/ip/Niacin-Vitamin-B3/109343699

Thank you.

Regarding this happening to just one duckling out of a group, that's how it was with our little runt. We think that part of her problems was an inability to digest/absorb nutrients properly so even though their food had plenty of niacin, more than necessary and the other five ducklings just thrived, we had to mix up special food with even more niacin for the runt plus Nutri-Drench and niacin in her food and water.

"Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks" recommended proportion of niacin is "2 to 3 cups of brewers yeast per 10 pounds of food." Or 1 to 1.5 cups per five pounds of food, etc. I just mixed it in with their big feed container so I only had to mess around with it once in a while.

I used this stuff from Amazon: AniMed Brewers Yeast. Lots cheaper and more convenient.
