I am at a loss on what to do at this point. I have an egg that pipped externally over 48 hours ago, on the narrow end of the egg. It pipped on day 28. I have read so many how to's and when to help but I am still not confident. The membrane is white and paper like externally, bit as soon as I tried to peel it back some there was blood from the membrane. I don't feel like I should help anymore, but I also have the concern of the duckling being shrink wrapped. I did increase humidity in incubator for the time being.

Okay, good move. Blood is bad, but finding it doesn't auto kill the quacker. Now I am more a chick assistant, but this is the issues I have with them. Pipping is fine and taking there time is fine. But once it is over 24 hours I will candle them to make sure they have room in the egg. I also make sure the pip has broken the membrane so they have air. If you go with the assist and find blood in the veins you need to then keep the membrane moist. I run my hatcher at 60% humidity but still have to wet the membrane. I use coconut oil the I have warmed. Even if it is shinny, go back and wet it again until the blood is clear. You may still need to help it through the membrane as it can harden.

Good luck

Thanks, I have done all this. I'm just worried about waiting too long. I find it very strange that it pipped on day 28 and 48 hours later it still it still isn't ready. I checked on it this morning and baby is still alive in the egg which I am relieved about. I know the duckling is going to need assistance bc it doesn't have alot of room due to it being at the wrong end.

I’m in the same boat! One of mine pipped at the wrong end yesterday morning. Nothing else all day. This morning I gave it a little breathing hole in the outer membrane. No progress. A couple hours ago, I chipped away at the shell in a circular pattern. I can hear it going nuts inside. Crossing fingers for both of us!

External pip occurred Thursday night, and hatched today at 6pm. I had to assist it. I checked yesterday and just moving the membrane I noticed the blood and veining so I wrapped in damp paper towel after I rubbed membrane with neosporin. When I checked today I knew it was go time. That duckling was ready to get out of there. Within an hour after hatching it was trying to walk.
