duckling with a flopy head

Quote:
well for the sugar water, i desolve one tea spoon in a normal size glass, but for the first shot, i actually put in 1 and a half, and them transfered the water into a tiny jar, made it warm ish, so its easier drank, and also i added a drop of vits to it too, and now, percy is running around, a bit wobbily, but this morning i was greeted by him walking around, i am delighted

i am delighted i helped my ducks as they would be dead if i didnt

as for the little sick one drinking, i let him have what he could, and then no matter how much he protested i held him and made him walk around with the others, gently, and i feel it made him want to interact with the others

and it paid off, and imso happy

Ok now i get it. I'm realy worried about her today, she hasn't gone to her water or food at all. She realy wasn't eating yet anyway but now i don't think she's drinking either. So do i put the sugar water in a sering (can't spell sorry)? She is sleeping way too much. Even when i put her bill in the water she just shakes her head and goes back to where she sleeps. I do have vitamins but it's for the chickens and the lady at the store says she doesn't give her ducks anything but feed. POOR ducks. She says they get what they need from free ranging. The name on the vitamins is Poly-Tonine A Complex for pullets, laying hens, broilers and turkeys. I don't know if it will help or harm my ducks and ducklings. I also went and bought piperazine dihyrochloride 53%, it's for worms in poultry, swines and horses. I don't know whats good or not.
This little ducks bill only has one nostral and where the other one is suppose to be is an opening kind of down the side of the top of her bill. But yesturday she was drinking and playing fine. Please help with info on the vitamins if you know about them. Thanks Angie.

well as far as the bill goes, keep the nostile area clean, the shaking of the head could be due to a little inhhaling, best tip i can give you is, just keep gently dipping the ower beak in, or one drop at a time, and she might drink it, as for vits, in ayoung chick, just make sure it doesnt have added iron, and chect to see it has selenium as it helps to absorb vit c and d, food i would say to you, get something like porridge and pour warm water on it to get it to soak up, last thing you want is it expanding in the crop, rinse well, with warm water, try and get some of the slime of it, then, add a pinch of sugar, and mix up, make it a tiny bit watery, and hold your baby over it, gently dipping the lower beak into it, hopefully she will like the taste, just watch to open nostril, keep it as clean as you can, it hopefully will grow back, as beaks are like finger nails, they constantly grow, my onliy issue would be, she might be left with only one nostril when the growth happens, for now, i would wet her food, you can get chick starter and wet it , with warm water, her beak may be sensitive to cold,

the water, one drop every hour at least, try for a few if you can, but take your time, sit with a cup of tea, every sip you have, give a drop to the baby, check your temp, i found 99 F was to hot for my guys, i went to 94 and it was perfect

also, as your ducky has only one closed nostril, maybe manke sure the humidity is at least 60, as it will get a very dry nose, hee hee, keep me posted on progress, and pics it ya can
i had a chicken with that, and she recovered well, i have founf out first hand, they recover in a heart beat, but do take nearly 4 days resting before they get the urge to get up,
hee hee, good luck

Thanks very much for all your help but she didn't make it. She passed Sat. afternoon. I was with her all day iand i knew she wasn't going to make it. She was getting cold so i held her till she was gone. I did get alot of picks though. Her nick name was special, and she realy was. It was my first time doing eggs. So it was kind of hard. I knew there were more to hatch on the weekend, i thought all she needed was a friend but i think there was more wrong with her than i knew.
Well i woke up and checked on my eggs and two of them had pipped. Then another one and then another one. Very big differance from when special hatched. She didn't do any chirping and these eggs do nothing but chirp. The first four hours was nerve racking because i just lost her the day before. It was so quick, one came out then the next, and so on. There are four more just waiting to come out. I can hear them chirping from here. The other four are under the heat lamp all nice and dry.
Here is a pic or two of special. You can't see her problem with her bill and eye.

Thanks they are very perky this morning. Can you tell me when they start eating? I put thier little bills in the water and they had a drink and then ran back to thier bed. Sooooo cute. Do i have to put thier bills in the food? I had chicks that learnrd everything on thier own. Any advice would be great thanks Angie.

New babies don't need to eat cause they are still absorbing their yolk sac. (24-72hrs after hatch) and the water intak is minimal and they will instinctually go to the water to drink when they need it.
Hope that helps.

Yes thanks. Everything i learn from the pros helps, lol. No matter how old you get you learn something new everyday.

Since you've been so helpfull with my constant questions, i have another one. Hope you don't mind. BUT you've been such a great help already. When do you let these little guys take thier first bath? I know the real duckling mama teaches them these things, but i got my first ducks when they were a month old and i was the first one to let them swim. At that age i knew it was ok. Do i keep introduceing deeper water or is there an age limit before you let them swim? One day i will know everything,LOL. Thanks Angie.

I would put them in the bathtub with enough water for them to still swim but stand too if they want, but they don't have all the preen oils they need from momma so they can get waterlogged after too long in the water and drown, so just supervise them swim. give them 5-10 mins. bath or so, luke warm water, and they will be lovin U!
Momma swims them first day hatched, they know how to swim. It is a hoot to watch too! so get your camera!
They will dive under water and it looks so funny!
Here is my Khaki Campbell duckling doin the dive in the Pekin's water dish

Thanks,
