Duckling with broken foot! Help!

I think if it does not get too worked up being held, I would try it, but if it starts to flail, I would leave it be and just sit nearby and give treats - as long as it has had a little grit so it can chew.

Okay well I'll leave him be since he isn't too fond of being held. He can stand and walk on his leg pretty well now, but prefers to lay down. He still has the splint on his leg. At what point do you think it would be okay to remove it?

I would take it off every few days and examine the leg - sometimes pressure can cause skin problems.

You should be able to hold the duck, just be careful not to disturb the leg.. I would also try to keep him from being to busy except during his swimming ventures to strengthen the leg..

Ok so at what point should I remove the splint completely? And should I be takin it off and letting the duckling swim?

I would follow the duck's lead - in other words, every few days take a close look, let the duckling swim and watch how it goes. I think you will be able to see the progress. When it seems strong enough, let the little walk without the splint and again, see how it goes. I believe they heal up pretty quickly, given good nutrition and a safe environment.
