I have two duck eggs under my broody hen and they started hatching early ( they were due to 22nd ). I noticed the one started on the wrong end, but it obviously getting enough air now. However, does it look like it needs help? The second egg also pipped on the wrong end.

They should be able to hatch okay once they have externally pipped. It takes them a little longer the usual because but they'll get there. Just make sure the membrane isn't drying out too. Good luck!

The membrane is looking yellow on the duckling that’s got his bill out. I don’t want to keep lifting momma up off them but I’m worried it’s already drying out some.

You can rub a little bit of coconut oil to moisten it up a bit. It helps a lot. It doesn't look to bad for now but because he may hatch slower it has a chance of drying out.

Do you have any liquid coconut oil you can dab on that membrane? It rehydrates REALLY QUICKLY and lasts for a long time. This is what I used with my extra-long-hatcher.

Edit to say... I see Silver had the same suggestion at the same time!

I think i might have some left, but I can’t remember. I know I used a bit when one of my hens had sour crop

@cluckingheck how is your duckling this morning?
Still working at it, but the hole is bigger. I don’t know when he started ( I got home from work at 9pm and didn’t expect anyone to be this early lol ), so I’m not sure where the 24hr “panic” mark is. The other duckling made a second external pip ( it’s actually pipped on the right end ) but hasn’t made as much progress like the other one.
