Ducks in smaller areas.

Ps. The biggest problem with keeping ducks in a smaller area is that once you have them you will want MORE and won't have the space (see comment above)!

It is totally possible to keep ducks in a smaller area... just be sure your city allows it first. The real trick is setting up an area that is safe and secure for the ducks that you can easily keep clean. If it becomes a horrible chore your family will not be happy!

Haha, thanks for the feedback. I'm willing to do all of the work with the ducks myself so my family shouldn't be too disturbed or annoyed besides the metal cloth on the fence and building a pen. And possibly the water bill. I live in a suburb of Columbus, Westerville. I do not believe the City of Westerville allows ducks to be kept, BUT we do not live within city limits so we may just have to follow Delaware County laws, which are much more lenient considering Del Co is a mainly rural county besides the suburbs. I still have to check with the HOA of our neighborhood but other than that I'm set to go! I really hope I am able to get a couple Black Swedish.

OldGuy43 has a water recycling setup, and you might be able to use rain barrels for water, also.

That's a good idea. Never would've crossed my mind. But, I did have another idea to run past you all and see what you think. As you know, we are limited on space. And we have a basement with hardly anything down there. Would it be possible at night, when we're away at work/school, and during storms, to put the ducks down there? I have enough room down there for an 8x8 pen, would that be enough for two ducks?

The only issue with that I can imagine would be mold... birds/ducks are very sensitive to it and basements can get musty. You would need to be sure that the basement is very dry. If their bedding or towels get moldy it can hurt them.

The basement is very dry. No mold. The basement has never been flooded (knock on wood), and we've never had any major water issues down there. A few months ago, a pipe burst down there for no reason when I turned on the garden hose, water went everywhere but luckily there is a drain down there and the basement dried in no time, without any mold. Also, could I leave my ducks out in the backyard during the day when I'm away?

We try not to leave the ducks outside alone unless someone is around... the yard is very secure fence-wise, but there is always the chance a winged predator could attack from above. They keep their eye on the sky and have hiding places, tho, and will scurry under the thorny palm or dense bushes if frightened (you should see them panic when the Goodyear blimp flies overhead, Lordy is that hilarious). If you need to leave them all day just build a run that is secure and covered.

Well we don't have many hiding spots. First off, our yard has only two trees and is in a neighborhood, second, it's Ohio. Flat as a board. Offers little hiding places. Although they could probably hide under the bay window or between the air conditioner, deck, and lilac bush. I don't even know for sure if I'm getting them yet. Will keep you posted! Although if we get them it definitely won't be until after July 23rd, because we'll be in Colorado for vacation until then.
