For the past month or so, I've noticed some ducks hanging around near a bush. For about a week in late march (march 26th to be exact) a male and female duck (I live in Ohio, the male had a green head and the female is brown feathered, I think they are Mallard ducks) were around a bush. Eventually I stopped seeing the male duck, and noticed the female duck had layed about 10 eggs. For the past 3-4 weeks the female duck has been sitting on the eggs, doing duck stuff, etc. However, I have a few concerns.
1) The female duck pulled a capri sun pouch under the bush and has been using that, along with a few other pieces of trash, in the nest. The garbage I saw was the capri sun pouch, a rice crispy treat wrapper, and half a torn plastic bag. Should I attempt to remove this trash?
2) We have a LOT of predators in our area. About 10 years back an elderly women who had about 15 cats died, and all of them were let out into the wild. That has formed a small population of wild cats which hangs around where I live. There are also a large number of crows, which I heard could attack the ducks. How can I prevent the predators from attacking, and what do I do/who do I contact if the mama duck is injured or killed and the eggs are still in the bush?
I've never had any interest in birds, ducks, etc, however I feel oddly connected to these ducks and don't want anything bad to happen to them! Any suggestions?
