Smooth concrete can be etched to become rough. It's a chemical process that gets stopped with water. It is an acid so it does need to be done with caution. My duck house has concrete pavers. We had to go that route because the irrigation system of our inground sprinklers and valve box are inside of it. The duck house is divided in two sections. One is storage with access to the sprinkler valve heads, and the other is where the ducks are. It turned out good that we put pavers in there and did not poor concrete, because last year we did have a pipe leak below and had to dig it up. Anyway the pavers are way to hard to clean up and they are rough on their feed. So I went out to the hardware store and bought black plastic runners. They are designed to catch dirt and are textured on both sides so the ducks will not slip on them. 3 of them cover their 8'x8' area. Best I can pull them out and scrub them is needed. Ironically stuff wont really stick to it. Sprinkle a little bit of wood shavings over it and can broom it out without any problems.
