Ducks; Pets Or Food Or Hobby

Mine are pets, food, hobby, and egg layers.

I'm very fond of them and they are very well cared for and treated nicely. I show the ducks. I eat the eggs and the meat.

If someone wants to be a vegetarian and keep ducks as pets, that's fine with me. I won't try to impose my menu on you. You can return the favor and not try to impose your menu on me.

I can't see any reason to think that this is a forum only for people who love their pets, so the mistake in perception is yours. You can't realistically expect others to comply with your misconception. You are invited to stay out of the meat bird section and to scroll over any notes about butchering or egg collecting.

Mine are for meat. I don't keep them as pets.

However, with that said, they are very well cared for and are raised and killed humanely.

i started to raise for meat. but then i grew to love my ducks. my dog attacked one and it was on inches from death so i put it out of the pain and we ate it a week later. i love duck it is like no meat i have ever tasted. is moist and if cooked properly its soooo good!!

my pure breeds are going to be bred for fun and hobby.
i love them.. but i will kill the ones i dont think are the best for show put them in the freezer. i like duck way better to chickens and the eggs are so much creamyer.
i cull my chickens after they turn 18 months. but i have a few we keep as pets.
my ducks have names i love on them talk to them and keep them warm and stress over them when they are sick..bring them in when they are under the weather or just because i want to hold them a bit.
but i also use them as meat animals just like my cows, pigs, goats, chickens, turkeys, and rabbits. im not a compleat savage who doesnt go out and talk to my animals pet them sit with them love on them and make them happy with treats and food. i treat my animals with respect.

Mine are for pest control and eggs.

I come from farm country, where livestock is for eating, and ducks are livestock. I'm not a vegetarian, but I am a mindful meat-eater. I would rather eat a happily raised animal I personally know had a happy life, than a factory raised animal found in grocery stores. Having said that, I find it difficult to eat my own animals.

Primarily, I am getting ducks this spring for eggs and insect control. I'm sure I will enjoy them, and most of them will be pets. I intend to hatch a clutch a year for local 4-H'ers to show and to renew my flock. I already know, though, that if I have too many drakes, they will go to my brother for the dinner table.

I keep mine as pets, but I respect people who raise ducks and after a good happy life given to these animals they are eaten. It is much better than purchasing them in a restaurant when the poor ducks were raised in messy and overcrowded factory farms.

I keep muscovies. Their primary use is for pest control in the garden. I live in the Pacific Northwest right near the ocean, and the slugs here are insane! i grow organic produce, so don't use slug poison. I have found the best method of slug control to be ducks.

That said, my ducks are also considered pets. They have names. But they do live outside in a duck coop and the garden. I am also a vegetarian, but I do not begrudge those who raise animals for meat. It's just a personal choice I made....for health reasons as well. I am fine with people's personal choices as long as their animals are well cared for and treated humanely.

Well, I started out raiseng for meat. But I begain to grow fond of them and now I sit out there and talk to they daily. Now I keep as pets, and egg layers. I will probably end up culling a few every now and then for a nice dinner. But mostly for pets, eggs, and hatching eggs.
