I have a khaki Campbell and a fawn runner. Both have been laying for the past week, but stopped suddenly. I got one egg yesterday and none today. They typically lay in the morning before I let them out to free range. I’ve looked for stashes both I and out of the coop/pen and found nothing. No sign of poaching or egg eating. I have more experience with chickens than ducks, and would love to hear your thoughts. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

One of my two Pekins isn't laying regularly - or maybe both. Anyway, I am only getting one egg most days. This started a couple weeks ago. They are young, just 25 weeks old.

They have plenty of water. They get plenty of food. I have calcium out. They get to free range in the yard most afternoons. The eggs are normally laid before sun-up.

  • Do ducks go through molt and slow or stop laying in fall and winter, like chickens?
  • Do they lay at various times like chickens?

Yes to both your questions. You should be able to tell if they are in molt by feathers laying around, that will stop egg laying till they grow them back.

And lack of daylight plays a part too. Just like with chickens they do have resting spells also. You may still get eggs off an on through winter since your girls are new layers. Just really depends on them.

There are feathers here and there. I just wasn't sure if I should be worried or not. Otherwise they seem healthy and happy. Thanks!

Oh! Let's see ....

I had one young duck that decided to lay about 4 eggs just a few weeks ago before deciding she had enough. :D
She is now molting. It's that time of the year where even the regular layers stop to molt.
