Ducks Swimming

They really were happy! lol They would even lay in my hand, on their backs to let me dry their little duck bellies!

I have a 1-2 week old Runner Duckling and I have been filling a medium sized bowl with hip-deep water for her to splash in. She loves it! I put it in a corner of the brooder she shares with my 4 chicks and it comforts her to know that the chicks are still close by. I pat her dry with a towel after about 5 minutes. Sometimes she takes more than one splash a day!

My first 3 ducklings are nearly a month old now. They are outside and got their kiddie pool today, although I don't think they have been in it yet. We got 2 new ducklings the beginning of the week. I found a suggestion to use a milk jug (or in our case a Sunny D jug) washed out really well and cut a little opening for them to drink out of. I thought it would work way better then the chick waterer since they will be able to dunk their noses in it. I thought the hole was small enough that they couldn't get in but I apparently forgot how small day old ducklings were. They get in there and swim around and have a great time. They get their drink and wash their noses and such and then go preen under the heat lamp. I will have to watch them as they get older so they don't get stuck getting in there once they get a little bigger but for now they LOVE having a place to swim in their brooder.

Oh yeah when my runner duck was only a couple weeks I put a small mixing bowl right in the brooder for her. She loved being close to her chicken brooder-mates. Then a week later, I switched her to a plastic cat-litter box that we never used. Today I just took all of them outside and put them in a small wire pen to play in since the weather was so nice and I put an even bigger round tub next to the pen and filled it, she LOVED diving in and swimming around! Even though the chicks have fledged before her, she is twice their size already, we have taken to calling her T-rex especially because she has such large feet and still tiny wings

She is so sweet and gentle around them though, I think they step on her more than she steps on them!
