Ducks Vibrating Their Necks

Actually the link Miss Lydia posted makes sense too. I guess they could also be happy/excited about the new duck
I actually think it could be both, depending on the situation. Thats why when introducing a young duck to mature ones it should always be done slowly and with supervision. just like your doing.

Thank you :). I will continue the slow and monitored introductions until the duckling is old enough to stay outside. I will make a pen inside the duck pen so they can all look at and get used to each other. Thanks again for all the input!

Now the younger duck is vibrating his neck before he goes after my dogs!

Better watch if duck goes after dog dog may not like it, my goose went after my mixed bird dog one to many times and she finally had enough, thankfully she just got a mouth full of feathers. But neck vibration can be right before a nip too.

I never let my dogs near the duckling if I am not holding him or if he is not out of the dogs reach. One of my dogs I will never trust with a small animal, but the other one, Finny (hence my username) could not have a care in the world about small critters. I was holding the duckling and Finny came over and started sniffing the duckling. The duckling did not like that apparently, so his neck started vibrating and then he pecked Finny on the nose. Finny just ran away. The duckling never instigates anything. I am almost positive the neck vibration means "I am about to peck" now. Thank you all for your input!

Sometimes observation helps us figure out the meaning of duck language.
