Ducks with fleas

I prefer softwood shavings instead of straight pine. They are 1,000x more absorbent and dry much more quickly. I ran out of the softwood and got pine from TSC and HATED it. I went back to petco and got the softwood right away. That's what I use in my duck house now too. Stays pretty darn clean. I am going to get some of that spray and some DE because we've got sugar ants in the duck house and I don't want them setting up shop in the wood.

Holy moly. That would break the bank if you compare that to the pine shavings at tsc. Also, pine is a soft wood. It is listed as one of the woods in that softwood bag of sophresh. In fact, pine is lower on the Janka scale than the fir wood. It lists spruce, fir, pine as the woods used. Spruce is pine. So basically it is pine and fir wood.
Maybe it is just smaller than pine flakes and seems to absorb better?

Could be... I only have three ducks so we don't go through shavings the way people with a larger set-up do. I have not found the cost to be prohibative since I'm only using them in the house, and using sand in the run. I'm also wondering if maybe I was thinking of aspen shavings? Can't be sure... they had kind of a funny smell and they were terrible un-absorbent. For a set-up of my size and how little I have to use, I definitely stand by the softwood.

If it works and you like it, I wouldn't change it. Just for me it would add an extra $8 per bag to get as much as I get now.
