Ducks with special Needs

I need help! I have a 1 yr female pekin ( Belle) that got her leg broken when a male was mating her:( I’ve taken her to the vet and tried shoes/ splints with no success! Her leg is healing crooked so she has trouble walking . Has anyone tried the therapaw splints made for dogs? Or any other ideas on what I could get her to help her be more mobile?

Hey there, sorry about your bird ! Iam going to guess shes lacking calcium if her leg broke that easily, She should be able to withstand another duck standing on her, But i wasnt there so mabye something else happened

If your not giving calcium feed and oyster shell you should start right now, all laying birds need it for strong eggs and bones

A pals muscovie broke her leg and it healed crooked and has been crooked for a few years

Also, any ideas re: what I could make or buy to enable her to get around ? The splints we tried came off right after she was put down on the ground:(

Hello everyone! I have a eyeless Pekin duck and her name is Erin! She is about to turn 5 weeks and is wonderful and very good at getting about! I know they need friends and to be social, but in her case she was too small to be with others and they would run her over so I kept her seperate. They went to someone else but I kept her so I could give her a chance. We are going to get her a friend but thought it would be best to wait to see if she is a male or female because of her “condition”. There is this hairless neck chicken thing (I think they are called Turken but now sure) and we are waiting for the chick to be able to go without a heat lamp before we introduce the two! Any advice on anything? Thanks

Why a chicken? Chickens peck and pick up on something being different. I'd really go for another duckling. I maybe wrong and this would work out great but having both chickens and water fowl. I just think you'd be better off getting Erin a duckling for company or when you find out sex getting a duckling the age of Erin.

Thanks for adding Erin's story to this thread! :thumbsup

I agree with @Miss Lydia - I'd be concerned about the "pecky-ness" of the chick, too. Also, ducks create such a wet environment, it might be detrimental to the chick...and another other duckling would be a better match as far as swimming and other duck-y activities, too.

You're doing a great job with Erin and she seems to really be thriving! :highfive:

Even if the chick (Turken) is not even a week old? Also, I could try to see how they are together since I don’t know where ducklings are sold. The Turken is with someone else right now but if they don’t go well together it would go back there with other animals.

Could you look at what I replied to for Miss Lydia and give me your thoughts on that? Thanks
