So I have been sketching a new coop for my girls for about a week. Finally have a plan and with help from my wonderful husband I have all my dimensions written out. Went to HD and got most of the materials, at least what I needed for the framing, but after I stained the run boards (with my clearance Cabot stain) I realized it was interior stain... not exterior!

AAAAARRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

Now I actually have to spend a full $20 bucks on exterior primer and another $20 bucks on exterior paint and go over my mistake.

Sorry.... just had to get that off my chest to folks who I think can feel my pain.

Sorry for you goof, but I seriously doubt as the pp suggested that any store would take back a used and open can of stain simply because you bought the wrong thing and used it. Put it on the garage shelf, and you'll surely find something to use it for later. I would research though wether you could put the exteriour stain on top of the interior without priming or maybe find a stain with primer already in it to save you two steps (and hopefully a couple of dollars). Good luck!

What about using an exterior poly or sealer? It's clear so your original stain would remain. I suppose if it's not UV stable that could be an issue but worth a shot.

Woop-Woop! Found out I can use an exterior stain on top the interior... or even coat it in an exterior urethane.

Just a note in case anyone does what I did

... also learned from a professional painter that interior stain will still protect my wood, but that the color will fade since the stain was not UV treated. I would just have to stain every year. Since I don't want to do that I'll just go over it with an exterior.
