MOULTON -- A Decatur man faces charges of breaking into a automobile after he was accused of taking a cup holder from a truck at a local car dealership Thursday, police said this morning.

Martin P. Ludlow, 35, Danville Park Road, unit 1, is charged with unlawful breaking and entering a motor vehicle and third-degree theft of property, Moulton Police Chief Lyndon McWhorter said.

McWhorter said Ludlow was arrested Thursday after officers received a report of a suspicious man at John Carpenter Ford on Main Street in Moulton.

“We got there and watched him walk over to a 2011 Ford F-250 truck, take something, put it under his shirt and then walked back to his vehicle and take off,” the chief said. “Just before we stopped the vehicle we were called by a person with the dealership who said he had taken the cup holders.”

McWhorter said he stopped Ludlow a few blocks from the dealership.

“When we looked into the vehicle he had several cup holders in there, but we found the ones taken from the dealership and had them identified,” the chief said.

McWhorter said Ludlow denied taking the cup holders, instead claiming they came out of his father's truck, until he was told police had watched him take them from the truck at the dealership.

Ludlow is out on bail of $3,000.

“I don't know why people do the things they do,” McWhorter said. “He could have gone and bought a cup holder for a lot less money that this is going to cost him as well as possible jail time.”
