Hey, this is a stupid question but I'm quite dumb over this. Approximately 6 weeks ago I found a brown egg in the run, oh, one here, there, quite unusual after 3 years. Then a couple weeks ago I found a leather egg, and the same day, a brown egg in the run. The girls were totaling their 3 a day brown eggs including the egg in the run. Well, 4 days ago, we had a tiny, what looked like a pullet egg, then again yesterday.

I feed Layena, they recieve fruits, veggies, corn, bread, some meat scraps and they do get some green grass, worms etc when free, also oyster shells are available in coop. They have been given Ivermectin for worms, parasites and lice.
We have not the clue who the culprit is.

Any ideas on how I may be able to trouble shoot this egg issue? Who ever it is, the 3 green and other 2 brown eggs layers are eating the same thing siblings hatched in the same batch.

Who ever it is will live a long life, but I'm confused if its something I should give them or remove from their diet.

Thank you in advance if anyone has a clue because I certainly don't!

Sounds like the feed is ok, maybe too many scraps? Large amt of scraps takes the place of things they need in their laying ration. I know that sounds rediculous, but commercial feeds are the product of fortunes spent of research and formulation. The othe thing is a question involving your use of Ivermectin. Please be aware that a 3-4 week period should transpire before egg consumption resumes after treating with Ivermectin. Can`t say who is having egg laying issues, but it should pass quickly........Pop

Thank you very much. I had an oldtimer tell me that once. They should not eat ANYthing else. So, I'll heed your advice, but would you come talk to the girls! Ha ha!!

I wouldn't stop the treats, just cut down a good deal. Then I won't have to drive all that way to talk to them for you.

Would definitely suggest cutting right back on treats for a week (and if you can bear from them to go completely without treats just for that week, that would be even better). You'll soon find out if the cause is dietary or not if the egg situation improves during that time.

I had to do it with my girls, and although they were confused about the lack of treats for a day or so, it didn't make them hate me, I'm glad to say!

I phased foods back in one thing at a time, and so had complete control over what might be causing the laying issues. I eventually found that too much broccoli seemed to be the culprit for my girls (I've come to understand since then that something in broccoli interferes with calcium absorption, so it actually seems logical to me now, in retrospect).

Good luck with the detective work

How soon after you have given the Ivermectin are you eating the eggs? I think you are supposed to wait a few weeks. It may be a good idea to read the package.
Good luck.

I honestly hate to say this...Gesh, I can be so dumb, never thought of tossing eggs out for that time. Guess thats why we don't have mites, lice, fleas and parasites

Now the broccoli thing is interesting where as it is high in calcium, vite C and higher in protein.

ddawn, what a hoot! I'll make you run all the way up here too!!!

I chucked the eggs for ten days after Ivermectin treatment. Didn't say how long on the packet, as the stuff I used was for cage birds and racing pigeons, so I just guessed! Haven't keeled over yet...

Well, neither did I...But for any of you using it, throw your eggs away! Thank goodness I don't sell eggs! lol
