Okay, I've read a bunch of posts, looked online, and can't find the answers I want, so I'm just breaking down and asking.... I'm a teacher- I tell people there are no dumb questions, but it doesn't help when I have to ask them! lol

1. Am I to assume that if my rooster is mating my hen who has not laid an egg yet that she may be getting close to laying? I'm not sure I understand my own question.... I have 9 chickens, of which there are 2 roosters. I observed 1 of the roosters holding down and mating a chicken today. They are only about 16 weeks old (Barred Rock) and although her comb is turning red and growing it's not what I would consider full grown yet. Will he mate her just because he can, or is she getting that close to laying?

2. Are wood chips okay in the nest boxes or do I need to get straw?

I know there was something else, but as usual, when I'm typing this I can't remember.... argh.

A hen will usually be receptive to mating a few weeks before she starts laying eggs. She's getting close!

I use wood shavings in my nest boxes. If I'm out I use hay.
