Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat - Part 2 : Chicken Boogaloo.

Pics
Luckily I haven't really had any stupid comments but when we first got our chickens we had a lot of people think you needed a rooster to get eggs. Even my mother. Even one of my aunts and my nana (who both live in western PA), thought that. Everyone we told thought that. I don't know, it's just not really common knowledge I guess.
So, the next time someone says , "Well, everybody *knows* ....." (such and such), we can respond, "Yeah, just like everybody knows you need a rooster to get eggs. Hahahahahahaha!"

That makes sense, thanks. I figured they'd probably taste the same but if I remember right the white ones seemed to have thinner shells but maybe that's a product of the particular farm or their diet as well and factory farmed eggs in general, brown or white, seem to have thinner shells than my chickens eggs.

Also how do they get the eggs all so uniformly colored!? Even my brown egg laying chickens all lay a different colored egg. The same breeds may lay a similar shade of brown but it's still slightly different than their sisters and/or a different shape, etc., and also vastly different than another breeds. Yet store eggs are so uniform

The thin shelled eggs are probably coming from hens whose diets are deficient in calcium. Plus, uniformity in size and/or color comes from sorting the eggs after they're laid. A dozen of my eggs are a mixed bag: large small, blue, dark brown, beige, green, etc. With only 6 hens, I'd have to have a full fridge of old-ish eggs to end up with a uniform box.

Eggs are eggs, no matter the breed. If the hens are raised the same, but all lay different colors, they will all taste the same. Egg flavor/texture is more about what the hens are fed, rather than what breed they are.

Correct me if am wrong, it seems like my Black Copper Marans eggs are more densed and creamy in textures and their shells are stronger in comparison to the rest of my chickens eggs (barred rocks, silver laced Wyandottes, leghorns, RIR, EE, BA & Blk sex links) and they are all fed the same feeds, do they probably eat more oyster shells and process their feed differently cause of their genetic make up? Sort of 2 guys eating the same stuff but one gets fat and the other skinny?

Exactly. I live in the home of Tysons, Georges etc... This area is one of the biggest poultry producing areas on the planet along with cattle, pigs etc... There are literally thousands of poultry houses here full of "white" chickens and "white" turkeys. Betting that many of the folks raising them don't know any more than the guy that you talked to.

Which may be the very reason they work in chicken housei in the first place

My wife...the incredible cook/baker/candy maker...says that you eat with your eyes first so those beautiful brown eggs are better even if they taste the same as those plain old white ones :D

But, the case I'm making is that this guy owned the poultry house. And he still didn't know what he was raising. Just grew out what was delivered, didn't ask any questions, most likely didn't care to ask any as long as he was getting paid.

Now that is amazing. I wish I could remember the name of the documentary I watchd. It was about the owners going against thd poultry companies, with whom they hold contracts. This guy knew what breed his chickens were, but of course I cant remember! They were fighting big chicken companies to release them from contracts, concern over conditions of birds (cage free) and workung conditions of owners. They were allowed no say of how their own chickens live. This guy opened these huge screen windows to allow sunlight and fresh air, the poultry giant instructed him to close it. Every singke facet of the business was run by big poultry.

Sorry, I got off topic.
