Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat - Part 2 : Chicken Boogaloo.

Had to explain that for an egg, the yolk is the equivalent of the placenta. Grossed him out good with that bit of info.
Not quite. The placenta acts to provide a conduit between mother's and embryonic vascular system for exchange of nutrients/oxygen with waste products/CO2, while the yolk is a source of nutrient for the developing embryo.

Placenta: A temporary organ that joins the mother and fetus, transferring oxygen and nutrients from the mother to the fetus and permitting the release of carbon dioxide and waste products from the fetus. The placenta is roughly disk-shaped, and at full term it measures about 7 inches in diameter and slightly less than 2 inches thick. The upper surface of the placenta is smooth, and the under surface is rough. The placenta is rich in blood vessels. The placenta is expelled with the fetal membranes during the birth process; together, these structures form the afterbirth.
Yolk:
a. The portion of the egg of egg-laying vertebrates, such as reptiles and birds, and of certain invertebrates thatconsists chiefly of protein and fat and serves as the primary source of nourishment for the early embryo.
b. This portion of the egg of a bird, especially a chicken, which is large, yellow, and surrounded by albumen.

I had to have a long and serious discussion with my mother about blood/meat spots, cloacae, and how an egg is fertilized (rooster logistics). She also didn't believe me about the bloom and proceeded to wash the day's eggs with a clorox wipe... to the trash went those. Oh, icing on the cake - she works labor and delivery/OB and is an LC at the hospital. Before asking me to more thoroughly explain any of the above, she and a handful of her coworkers (all in OB-GYN fields) had apparently made some questionable google searches....
I nearly died laughing when reading her search history. Gotta love my city-girl mom who's idea of off-the grid was making hot cocoa over a candle during a power outage a couple years back.

The Western Medical Model isn't real big on anything "natural". Just look at their view of having babies. When I was having mine 40 years ago, shaving, enemas, the whole shebang was required before a baby was allowed to come into the world. I hear they've done away with all that, now. When my mother was having babies, nursing was discouraged and formula made from canned evaporated milk was de rigeur because anything made in a factory was "healthier". I have a friend who worked in the NICU for 44 years, and processed foods only are found in her kitchen. The only surprising thing, here, is that any of us came out of our childhoods alive.

I posted about how it was cold enough to freeze the chicken nipples last night on my facebook, and I'm a little disappointed in the total lack of commits I got from that.

First cold snap here in SE Michigan that got cold enough to freeze the water in my nipple bucket waterer. And sure enough, the nipples were froze this morning. I sat the girls up with a dog dish of fresh water for the day. Going to be glad to have my ten pound lifting limit lifted on monday so I can swap out my waterers to the heated one.
