Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat - Part 2 : Chicken Boogaloo.

So to add to the helping yourself talk I have to add a story.

We got new neighbors when I was growing up. A few years later the wife's grandmother passed away and they decided that they would bury her in the field that borders my parents property. My uncle also owns property that connects to the burial site. They told the hearse driver to go to my uncles property at the end of the road and drive through the field. A field with cows on private property. My uncle found the driver taking down the electric fence.
Holy Crow! That is so crazy! What happened?

I never thought of all the potential problems.... I'm too nice, I'm like "what would walking their dog hurt?" Lol when you put it like that, it makes a lot of sense.... i think I'd be scared at night by random people too.

Although i dont get how they can sue. They can here too but it never made sense to me. Maybe if you didn't have a no trespassing sign or invited them or whatever but if you have a sign, especially multiple clear signs, and they do it anyway, aren't they at fault?
Yes. If you post signs & tell them to leave, but they keep coming back, they are knowingly breaking the law & its on them. Imagine if you didn't post signs or say anything. They could fall in one of our huge potholes & say, "I walk my dog here everyday. Nobody ever told me I was trespassing." Even if they don't actually sue you, the odds are good they're gonna want you to pay their medical bills.

(*Side story) DD1 fell in our yard last October. She simply came off a step wrong, but she landed at a weird angle trying to right herself, twisted her foot & fell. We didn't even think it was broken at first. Turns out she not only broke her ankle, but she tore up the ligaments pretty good. A broken ankle for a young, healthy chickadee like her can heal in 4-6wks in a boot cast. The torn ligaments take a lot longer than bone to heal & had her in a boot cast for 12wks, plus 2 trips to the physical therapist after the cast was off to help her regain strength in that foot. Add up, 1 trip to her doctor, multiple xrays to find the break, 2 trips to the orthopedic doctor, the cost of a boot cast & ankle brace & 2 trips to the physical therapist... It was dang expensive! Recovery went from the beginning of October thru the beginning of January. All from one little misstep doing the same chores she does every single day. We told both doctors what happened, but all the while the insurance company kept sending us out forms asking who's property we were on when it happened & were we sure we weren't at a friends house, public facility, or at work. Also did we own our own property, or was there a landlord they could contact, etc... It was unbelievable. The insurance co was desperate to find someone else to help pay for it so they wouldn't have to.

Actually my driveway is cut through about an acre of blackberry (personally would rather not have it, but it's unavoidable here). It does make a great fence except it is constant maintenance. From spring through fall I spend far more time cutting it back than any other outdoor activity. And once you've cut back several hundred feet of blackberry, you realize... you get to do it all again, because it's already growing back!

Same here. One acre of property. One side is entirely bordered by black berries. It is not fun having to retrieve eggs in.

Ouch. That has to smart. But, just think of all the blackberry jelly!! I give it for gifts, and have to go off my property to find the berries, heaven knows where (without trespassing).

I would love having them at home. Not a half-acre's worth, but ....

Wow! You guys had a lot to say this weekend & I've enjoyed reading every bit of it! It was a tough weekend trying to straighten out the fence where it had been smashed down to the ground. We did the best we could & since fireworks are illegal & blackberries don't grow very well out here, we planted some bougainvillea bushes along the fence line. They are beautiful, need very little water & have long, vicious thorns on them.

As much as I dislike confrontation, there are so many reasons why you cant have people trespassing on your property. Most of you guys already know this, but for the few of you who haven't experienced it yet, allowing strangers to trespass on private property opens you up to lawsuits if that person gets hurt while on your property. Here, our road is on a hill, badly rutted, inhabited by snakes, scorpions, hoards of Black Widow & Wolf spiders, is pitch black at night & has a few of the neighbors dogs running loose... Its a lawsuit waiting to happen if we didn't post signs & shoo people off. Over the years more than a few of the neighbors have been hurt (being knocked down by a dog, falling on the road, breaking ankles, cracking their head open, being hit by a car, being bit by dogs & poisonous spiders, etc...) If any of these things had happened to a trespassing stranger, me & my neighbors would be in big legal trouble. In addition, a dark culdesac with no street lights, right next to a field is a dream come true to people who are up to no good. For the first few years after we moved here, we spent every weekend cleaning up newly dumped piles of fast food trash, empty alcohol bottles. ashtrays full of cigarette butts, dirty underwear, used condoms & I swear to you, even tampons kicked out on my driveway. It was DISGUSTING!!! We have dealt with dozens of people smoking pot, dealing drugs, breaking into cars, gang graffiti & 12yr old boys lighting stuff on fire in my bushes. Believe me when I tell you that reminding people they are trespassing is not something that I want to do, It is something that I have to do.

No.

When my husband and I bought our first house in suburbia, he put up a chain link fence around the yard, "ruining" the park-like atmosphere of all the adjoining back yards. The neighbors directly behind us were a pregnant young teacher and her law student husband who smugly told my husband that the fence would not protect us from law suits because "If my kid climbs over your fence and up your tree, then falls out and breaks his leg, I'll sue you. And, win." Not taking threats by smug little twerps in law school well, my husband replied, "You do, and you can expect a visit from a guy in a black suit, black shirt, and white tie, named Guido. He'll be carrying a violin case." The jerk never said anything threatening again.

Unreal!

I have to agree with Mark Twain, "The more I learn about people the more I like my dog."

Yes, my dog (puppy, only got him recently) rolled over and peed in the air when I tried to teach him "Down."

That's a extreme 'submissive' gesture. I had a stray do that used to do that. You'll need to reassure him that you won't be angry with him if he doesn't understand what you want. Fussing at him for this is actually counter-productive, as it make him think he needs to submit HARDER, causing him to pee even more.
Of course, it could just be excitability and a weak puppy bladder. Either way, being patient and gentle with him will solve the problem.

Thanks! Yeah, he is a rescue, and I don't know too much of what he was treated like as a really young pup. The lady we got him from said things were kind of weird where she got him, and that he may have been abused.

Sounds like he definitely could have been then by his behavior.

I think with some love and positive reinforcement/clicker training he should come around :)
