Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I was talking to my friend who grew up on a cattle / grain operation and had geese as a child, we were prevet majors in college together until we changeed course and she also works at a vets office....background info is important haha. SO....she asked if I still had my chickens since we had a predator problem at one time. I said yes, but I am down to 5 hens, 1 rooster, and a lone duck...she looks at me and says oh you have a rooster so you are getting eggs then.....When will people learn hens are just like women only their unused eggs are useful (sorry probably inappropriate)
I'd never heard it put in quite those terms, but you are right.

I feed mine Pomegranates, they're very middle class lol
Ours get the peelings from anything we eat, plus the other day we had a pomegranate that was overripe so my wife gave it to the chickens. Today they got the peel from a persimmon and thought they had a special treat.

Every time we go out the back door the chickens (6 hens and a rooster) come running to see what treat we brought them. Our Rhode Island Red hen will stand in the way looking up and telling us to giver her a treat. We started keeping a 40# bag of wild bird seed near the back door and I bring a handful of it sometimes when I go outside. The hens will gather around me eating from my hand. Yesterday our Rhode Island Red rooster even ate a couple pieces from my hand. He's only been with us a couple months (same age as the hens, but we bought him after our other rooster was killed) so he's a little skittish, but I thought it was cool when he came up and took a couple pieces of feed from my hand.

Not chicken related, but definitely in line with the "lack of common sense" posts:

A friend of mine once got some of those plastic bowl covers that look like shower caps. When her husband saw them, she led him to believe they *were* shower caps and the idea was all hers. He thought she was brilliant and should market her "invention".

Months later, he saw them being sold in the grocery store and said, "Look, honey! Someone stole your idea and is now making a fortune off of it!"

This is the same guy who thought you *grew* pickles, instead of pickling cucumbers.

To a gardening friend: "These pickles are good. Did you grow these?"

HER: "Why, yes I did".

HIM: "Hey, honey! Find out what kind of pickles Barbara grew, so we can grow some".

He isn't even blonde.

"Pickles" is a regional term. Where my dh is from they grow pickling cucumbers. Where I currently live and where my mother grew up they would look at you as if you were putting on airs if you called it pickling cucumbers; it was just pickles. Some people pickle their pickles and some have them in salads; confusing, eh?

I was talking to someone about my chickens. I had said that I have 6 beautiful looking chickens. And she said, "Actually, you have 5 chickens and 1 rooster." Really? Aren't they ALL chickens? I still laugh at that one!

My daughter in law asked us if our roo was a chicken too

got a love her and the hubby used to think that the eggs in the store were bleached to be white. I guess I was blessed to have grandparents with a small farm as a kid other wise I just may be asking the same dumb questions. They do walk among us.

All those regional things get confusing sometimes...Coke...pop...soda! Although my husband and I only grew up 10 miles apart and I say pickling cucmbers and he says pickles.

So maybe it is personal preference not regional

I feed any peelings or fruit that is about to get bad. A few days ago i was eating pomegranates and all the seeds that i left i fed to them. Even when Im in my garden When I find worms I get all I can for them.

Another about my sister...I was telling her i just ordered 25 ameraucanas chicks that should arrive in a few months. She opened really big her eyes and asked me why I need so many chickens for just me and the dogs. I have right now 22 laying hens and some small chicks and a few roosters. With the ordered chicks I can end up with around 55 chickens between ameraucanas, black copper marans and ee's. I told her that I planned to breed them and sell chicks, eat eggs and she should not complain or make fun of me because every month when she visits she takes 3 dozen with her. So she benefits... She told me point taken and left.

So my mother came over for a visit today and we were discussing my chick orders...

Mom: So what, you have to incubate them.

Me: No, we're getting day old chicks, not eggs.

***I show her a picture of chicks in brooder box.***

Mom: So you're gonna keep those alive? How are you gonna keep 'em alive?

Me: Well, I've been researching for months and I figure the best way to go is throw some food at 'em and hope for the best.

Since we've talked about my getting chickens more than a few times over the past few months I really couldn't believe she asked me that. Gotta love her!

Since we only have 3 hens (and just started with chickens last Spring), we don't have enough extra eggs to share them far and wide. So we hadn't run into many strange comments. Our parents and neighbors love when we can share and know that they are especially good.

When visiting my parents over Christmas, we brought all the eggs we could, as my sister and her family were there too. My husband was talking to my brother-in-law about them and said they were the freshest, best tasting eggs he'd ever eat.

My BIL said "My eggs are white and come from the store, a dozen to a carton!"

DH tried, and said "Store eggs are weeks old when you get them. These are fresh, days old at most and our chickens are well cared for, healthy, and eat good feed." (he didn't mention the tasty bugs and weeds!)

BIL just made a face (like someone suggested eating something gross) and said not for him.

I was surprised and now wonder what my sister thinks! Since they live far away, we only see them a couple times a year and pretty much never at our house. So they haven't seen the chickens in person yet. I'm sure they think we're really weird!

I am really sorry about your family!

Mine can't get enough of them, but my Mom grew up on a place in San Jose that was a chicken farm.
