Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

"Pickles" is a regional term. Where my dh is from they grow pickling cucumbers. Where I currently live and where my mother grew up they would look at you as if you were putting on airs if you called it pickling cucumbers; it was just pickles. Some people pickle their pickles and some have them in salads; confusing, eh?

This guy wasn't using it as a regional term. He really thought they were grown with the *pickle* taste already in them. He couldn't compute that they started out as UNpickled cucumbers.

Since we only have 3 hens (and just started with chickens last Spring), we don't have enough extra eggs to share them far and wide. So we hadn't run into many strange comments. Our parents and neighbors love when we can share and know that they are especially good.

When visiting my parents over Christmas, we brought all the eggs we could, as my sister and her family were there too. My husband was talking to my brother-in-law about them and said they were the freshest, best tasting eggs he'd ever eat.

My BIL said "My eggs are white and come from the store, a dozen to a carton!"

DH tried, and said "Store eggs are weeks old when you get them. These are fresh, days old at most and our chickens are well cared for, healthy, and eat good feed." (he didn't mention the tasty bugs and weeds!)

BIL just made a face (like someone suggested eating something gross) and said not for him.

I was surprised and now wonder what my sister thinks! Since they live far away, we only see them a couple times a year and pretty much never at our house. So they haven't seen the chickens in person yet. I'm sure they think we're really weird!

Sorry about your BIL, my brother and his wife are like that too, as well as my MIL and two SsIL. The only people in my family who are pro-chicken besides DH and myself are my parents, particularly my dad (older folks who grew up knowing what real eggs look and taste like - but who were suprprisingly chicken ignorant) and my BIL. Go figure...too many ignorant Jersey people. We are out in Hunterdon County so, in theory, there should be less ignorance out here...alas...

This is a riot, I love these posts!
I have spent a lot of time explaining to folks that you don't need a rooster to have hens. After about 30 minutes with one guy and explaining that chickens are just like women, he still could not get it. Since I am not a biology teacher and he was aparently NOT going to get it, I just dropped the conversation.
A co-worker does not like to eat my eggs because she does not like the thought they they could potentially become chicks. She buys egg beaters. I am not even going to have the discussion that begins with "Egg beaters are made from eggs..." Not to mention that they taste like the other stuff that comes from the vent...

I guess I have been lucky. Everyone I talk to loves the idea of fresh eggs. My family and neighbors eagerly wait for them. My neighbor said he missed the roosters crow after we got rid of it.( we live in a small town) My sister told me I was charging too little for my eggs as they are much better than store bought. I think I have learned the most, like not needing a rooster. And it has taken a bit for my stomach not to turn when I cooked our own eggs. I still find myself keeping the leghorn eggs for me and feeding the brown and green eggs to my kids. Guess old habits die hard!

I charge $2 a dozen for free range, organic eggs. Am I over charging?
The cartons that I use brake in two parts, each side holds six eggs, and I charge $2.00 for six... I call them Six Packs...
The local elementary school lets the kids raise chickens and sell the eggs as a fund raiser, they sell them for $5.00 a dozen.

I have come to the conclusion that some people don't understand reproduction at all....human or animal. I had a woman who has had 3 children and is well educated thoguht not in a science field, ask me what your cervix was; after a commercial about Cervical cancer....I'm not sure what she thought was dialating. I mean I think ppl know where babies come from but as far as the science many are lacking. Maybe it is just because I never grew out of the 3 year old stage of asking "why?" about everything that I decided birds and the bees wasn't good enough.

On a related but unrelated topic: I had a proud mommy moment about 3 years ago when my daugther then 3 became the resident farm girl in her class when she was the onnly one that new milk did not come from the store but from a cow :) and we dont have a milk cow.

$4 a dozen for free range mostly organic eggs (feed is organic soy free, but some treats are of inferior quality). So I think $2 is really low!
