I'll take the part that you are leaving out....

Stopped buying the left out part years ago but at times wish I had it or something else.

All this vegan talk is silly.

I agree.

My sister asked if we eat the eggs from the hens now that we no longer have the roo. When I told we ate them when we had him she had the standard ewww response. I told her she needed to google and see how the chickens are kept that supply her with eggs that is truly a very sad thing a big WHY.

Yes it is sad, I agree. I didn't know much about my store bought eggs until I really looked into it. It took a very long time ( we traveled due to military) to actually have chickens n fresh eggs. I just don't get why people say ewwww to fresh organic eggs. They r better for you and taste a million times better. I used to beg chicken owners for eggs but then again I'm the bubba gump of eggs... I like em fried, poached, over easy, hard boiled. U get my point. Lol. :)

I have five pullets and two cockerals that will be a year old in May. We plan on sending the two cockerals to freezer camp some time in May but hoping one of the girls will go broody and we can have a hatch before the boys are culled (I'd like a few more EE pullets). The funniest thing people have said about my plan is "how will you still get eggs if you get rid of the boys". Seriously, so many people have said this, it just cracks me up.

Someone actually argued w me that I wouldn't have eggs w/o a rooster. This went on n on til I explained it in 3rd grade science style! I walked away just laughing! Lmao

Basic science, right? We had an adorable parakeet that we were certain was a female, confirmed when she laid her first egg. She only laid a couple a year but everyone wanted to know how that happened without a boy parakeet.

I've been following this thread for a while now, but I think I finally have something to contribute!

I was at Chemistry class today when the woman who sits next to me (who I have mentioned my chickens to before) asked how my chicken was doing. She specified that she meant my blue splash Marans, Frou-frou.

I asked her if I had mentioned that Frou'f had laid her first egg last week, at which point she got all excited and asked how long it would take to hatch (implying that she thought I was incubating it).

Now, I don't have roosters in with my hens, so I explained that the egg was infertile and wouldn't hatch. I also mentioned that I usually don't incubate my eggs, anyway.

Her response?

"Well, if you wanted to hatch it, could you take it to a farm and have their rooster spray it or something?"

This is a nice woman and she was genuinely curious, so I didn't laugh at her or anything. I explained as best as I could that the egg is fertilized before the hen lays it and told her the length of incubation and everything.

...But looking back at it... Wow.
