I've been following this thread for a while now, but I think I finally have something to contribute!

I was at Chemistry class today when the woman who sits next to me (who I have mentioned my chickens to before) asked how my chicken was doing. She specified that she meant my blue splash Marans, Frou-frou.

I asked her if I had mentioned that Frou'f had laid her first egg last week, at which point she got all excited and asked how long it would take to hatch (implying that she thought I was incubating it).

Now, I don't have roosters in with my hens, so I explained that the egg was infertile and wouldn't hatch. I also mentioned that I usually don't incubate my eggs, anyway.

Her response?

"Well, if you wanted to hatch it, could you take it to a farm and have their rooster spray it or something?"


This is a nice woman and she was genuinely curious, so I didn't laugh at her or anything. I explained as best as I could that the egg is fertilized before the hen lays it and told her the length of incubation and everything.

...But looking back at it...

Wow.

Isn't there a fish that does that, fertilizes the eggs after they have been laid? Ohhh hope I am not being one of those people but it seems that I read or heard this somewhere.

A man came over today and asked if my hens were roosters or chickens after I told him they were "chickens"

he asked if we eat the eggs then caught himself and instead said Oh you don't get eggs because you don't have a rooster. When I told him they lay without a rooster, he is only needed to fertilize the eggs, just like my eggs need to be fertilized to make a baby, same theory he said "Oh, okay, okay I get that." he actually understood. First time I have ever used this for an explanation but it worked.

That's what my mom's class said about my favorite hen's beautiful green egg! You know how in the store, the eggs are sorted by Omega 3's, extra vitamins, and *vegan*? That's just ridiculous! People have said other crazy things about my chickens; someone once asked "what the big red thing on top of his head" was. And crazier things if I kept track!

thankfully cartoons and a quick trip as a kid trough the chicken barn taught me it was the size of them that was the difference between genders....
