Dumb things people have said...
well it is usually about the one green egg I have in a carton of brown eggs. Some people never knew a green eggs existed.
One little girl told me when I had a green egg in hand, to throw it away because it looked like a bad egg...moldy.....

A lady was counting down the days till her eggs hatched. Was wondering why they have gone over their due date
and nothing happened. So the other lady asked her some questions about her birds and then told her she was not
going to have any babies hatching. The first woman still did not get it...and the second lady finally had to tell her she had
no male bird in her flock. No rooster. No babies.

That's so funny cuz before I got my hens ( none are old enuff to lay yet) I used to ask everyone I knew who had chickens of I could buy eggs from them. I actually begged!! I felt like I was scoring something illegal.... Lmao
Kind of like folks who try to buy unpasteurized milk, only without really being illegal in most places? "Hey buddy, can I score a dozen brown pastured eggs from you?"

Chickens are omnivorous, they will eat just about everything but there are some things like citrus that's not good for them. My friend feeds her chickens all her leftovers that are safe n those gals will eat it all. Lol. I know many people whose chicken diet is only 25% of feed n the rest is scraps from the dinner table and the eggs are fabulous. ;-)
The only place I've ever heard about citrus being bad for chickens is here, and our chickens devour any citrus peelings we toss out to them with no ill effects. What they eat does affect the taste and color of the yolk though. The vegetarian diet commercially raised chickens are fed gives a pallid yellow yolk.

The other day in art class a girl was showing cute pictures of her new puppy to our teacher. So I decided to show some cute pictures of our newborn goats and my chickens

I showed this pic of one of my 3 day old TSC red pullets
400

To which she replied "what is it?" And I said a baby chicken and she said "why isn't it yellow?" And yes she was serious.

Then I showed her this pic of one of my silkie hens and my Pomeranian
400

And she said "is that a chicken too? Why would you hold that thing?"

I've kept my fresh eggs 2 months and ate them no problem.

A lady at work was buying eggs from me until she heard me tell someone the chickens loved to eat grasshoppers! I'd hate to see what she'd do if I told her what has touched that salad she eats from the grocery store!!!
You might tell he that a lot of people in other countries eat grasshoppers, too. That ought to make her day.

I never thought I would hear some of the silly things I read on here but I did the other day and nearly burst out laughing in frontof her.

I had been complaining about my hens taking a long break from laying this winter. An older woman who I have known for a while now over heard me and quickly informed me "If you get a rooster and put it in with the hens for a few weeks this will cause the hens to start laying. Then you can just take him out and they should continue to lay" Then before I could say anything someone else said "(her name) should know! She has had chickens for years!" Now I felt like the idiot, but I politely informed her that I do have a roo 24/7 but the length of daylight is what controls laying, not the presence of a rooster.
But I was again informed of the above statment... :/ It took everything I had to not start giggling! She was dead serious!

My mom showed a picture of me with two of my owls on my shoulders, and we got all sorts of comments like,
"OMG! Is that some sort of parrot?"
" You shouldn't let wild birds near you, you could get brain tumors" (she was serious)
" Wow. That's so stupid, why would you capture innocent birds, they want to be free!"(If they wanted to be free they would have flown away years ago.)
" Hey, your son has two owls? Wow, i knew your family was crazy, but i never would have thought they would catch poor defenseless birds!"(If they were so defenseless, how come i have scars on my hand from the mother?)

Honestly some people need to be put out of their misery, or actually become educated.

And no, i never caught any of these. I got them from my mentor in falconry.

I agree, I have only hear the citrus thing here on BYC, I put AVC (apple cider vinegar) in my chickens water and pretty sure that is more acidic than citrus. Other than that it has a lot of Vit C, but pretty sure that is good for all creatures. Don't claim to be an expert though, LOL! Love this thread! Really like the owl comment and tumors, people are so funny. Some I "get", some just makes be want to give the "Really???"
