Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

That sounds good! Luckily I only saw that pair, the uncaged (??) BR hen, and the little chicks being mistreated. There was a separate area with about 60, mostly rooster, beautiful show birds. They were all for sale and I swear I would have gone home with those silkies (or as Mali affectionately started dubbing them, "llama chickens"), the blue andalusian hen, those mincoras that were just... fabulous, maybe the blue laced red wyandotte, or the silver spangled hamburg. The salmon faverolle. The bantams that could fit in my hand. The muscovy duck. Gosh, the list goes on... sadly I was on a band competition weekend trip and there was a specific rule - "no live animals on the bus." Next year I'll have my mother drive me up separately and get myself some rare breeds <3
this is why i hate going to fairs, swaps, and shows. seems i walk in there to sell a pair or two, and i end up buying enough to fill my truck. Im starting to think i could be an addict.

Oh they are just gorgeous! I love the different way that they looks, so pretty. Hatcheries just kinda scare me. I get my chickens from there since I don't have the money or the car to get chickens from reputable sources, but I love the birds nonetheless. Almost tempted to call them mix breeds if that's where they come from :p

I think I would have to fall for the bantams... so, so, so adorable, and the feed store (mother thinks shipping is cruel to the birds. Did she miss the fact that the birds get shipped to the feed store?) only carries straight run.

I feel exactly the same way! I bought 5 or 6 last year at our local fair. though to be fair and provide an excuse for my addiction I needed new bloodlines in my flock and I did take and sell two! lol

I just ordered some feather legged bantams from Murray McMurrays. I don't mind ordering from hatcheries unless I'm after a specific color pattern like with the wyandottes. My feed store only ever carries the most bland colored birds.

Well I think I'll get a few hens from the feed store this spring, maybe 5 or 6, and get myself a lovely cockerel and a rare breed I really want next year. As long as the excuse works for you, I see no problems with the excuse....

It's a good addiction... my family doesn't think so (in a family of lawyers, politicians, and economists, the girl who wants to be a Doctors Without Borders farm chick is not very welcome lol), but it is. And we all understand... how can you resist DEEP brown RIRs? Honestly?

I have 3 RIR's, 3 Golden Comets that are 6 months old and 2 Barred Rocks, 1 Dominique, 1 Speckled Sussex, 1 White Leghorn and 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte that are 6 weeks old and my wife think's something is wrong with me because I told her in the spring I want to get some Easter Eggers.....lol

Oh I love speckled sussex hens that's another breed I want to buy fully grown and not at a hatchery. EE's are a great addition although I don't have them anymore I really enjoyed their personality they were all so unique.

I actually don't have chickens.

I used to have 3. They were my babies, I loved them so

Our sucky HOA sent them away. The only good thing they left us with was a brilliant suggestion : there is a neighbor with about 2.5 acres, plus a house, and the only part they use is the house and about a half an acre for their horses. I think they have 3, and don't even stable them, I don't believe. And that's only rarely... basically they drive from the house they actually live at to their house about every day to feed and water the horses and sometimes spend the night. The rest is just a big paddock, a few sheds, and a trailer... and they are our friends... so we're offering to give them 1/4 of our eggs and if I get a rooster and a good broody girl (which I highly plan upon), chicks for themselves if they desire, for free, that I would raise. They wouldn't have to do anything, and since the property isn't being used... I don't see a reason to say no. I'm very excited, since mom finally gave in and said that this spring we can get some chickens. She doesn't know what she's getting into... I want at least 15 before I graduate

So that's my story.

Speckled sussex are lovely, I'm very fond. EE's are simply delightful. They are what I had. The feed store claimed Araucana, but then on the label said.... cross between araucana and americauna.

So I'm calling them easter eggers. And I lovedddd them! I have to admit that August was a bit flighty.
