Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

We were at a friends one night. We are much more "country" than many of our friends...so they all call our house/property "the farm" even though its only 5 acres. One friend says he doesn't like eggs because he's heard of people cracking them open and there being a half grown chick in the egg. I told him that we collect eggs a couple times a day and that for someone to get a "half grown chick" it would've had to have been under a broody hen for around two weeks. He said " well how do you know she didn't lay it that way?" I had to explain they don't "lay them that way" and that all eggs are just yokes and whites when they are laid. ...don't think he believed me. Then he asked how eggs are different colors after he saw our egg basket. (All shades of brown and blue/green) We just said different breeds of chickens. Then the question that most chicken owners have heard...."We'll what about the white eggs" another girl pipes up like she knows all about it and says "Well, they bleach them," hubby and me tried to explain while laughing that eggs aren't bleached. That, once again, different chicken. She didn't believe us and i think was actually mad. The lack of knowledge of where people's food comes from is actually scary. I don't expect them to know everything about chickens...but to not know even the basics of where eggs come from, and that chicks don't come right out of a hen......??? ****deep breath***

I wasn't arguing with your point, just making sure everyone here knows that birds are animals. Someone in my biology class last year believed that reptiles weren't animals

I got your point, made me laugh

. Sometimes my brain is much faster than my fingers, when I go back and read things I posted, I wonder how anyone responded to them. Yep, they are all animals

Got a new one from my MIL when she was here for Christmas. My one chicken lays small eggs because I don't feed it enough.

Oh! Here's another one! "Your eggs are the same as store bought".....ummmm NO! Apparently she had never had fresh eggs or read about how much better free range eggs are for you. Happy free hens make super yummy healthy eggs.

Ha! My sisters are like that. they won't cook with my eggs because they're brown and not white. I explained to them that the eggs are healthier since our chickens are happy and healthy and they gave me a look, saying, "But they aren't /clean/"

Ha! Since when were battery hens clean? Or their eggs for that matter since they scrub the bloom right off!

Though, they may consider using them if I get white layers.

In other news, my father asked, "Can't you make them lay more eggs?" And I responded, "If you want more eggs, buy me more chickens." Luckily I was in the next room and he was watching telly or that could have turned ugly.

Sold RIR stock to neighbors last summer. Had a guy text me wanting a RIR rooster. Elderly neighbors had asked me a few months ago if I wanted the roo back becaise it is aggressive. So I called to ask if they still wanted to get rid of their rooster. 'No, we're still getting eggs.' WHAT?!?! Then I realized they think they have to have a roo for the ladies to lay! I've also had older/elderly people tell me I can't incubate/hatch in winter because eggs are only fertile in Spring. Okey dokey then....I don't correct them because I don't want to be mean or seem rude so I just laugh alittle every time a chick hatches in winter or an egg is laid with no roo in sight:)

So, I have this sister, lol, that wants to get to a more natural, healthy lifestyle. I'd heard her go on and on about growing her own garden, canning her own food and such so I'd sugested a few hens for fresh eggs. Her reply? " I'm waaaay to lazy to take care of chickens." Huh?

Granted chickens can be work, depending on how many and such, but she obviously has never put out a garden either. Gotta love my sister..

My garden and canning/preserving are sure a lot more work than my chickens.

Tell her chickens will also give her good compost for her garden.
