Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I know my friend was a bit off when she said oh no now you have to get rid of your eggs b/c they're fertilized, umm, noooo lol.

My same friend said br chicks with dots on their heads are female. I had to put some in this fish tank while we build the new enclosed run today.

Which is a bit easier this time, but this isn't the pimp coop that still needs to be built to house the svart honas, ayam cemani and white bresse that I'm getting soon, as a sustainable meat chicken project.

These itty bitty peep peeps are my trial run at raising meat chickens. My bf reminded me today not to get very attached to these chickens. Especially if I want another coop and run built before winter hits to house my fancy meat chickers.

The greyhounds are jealous that their pooping grounds are turning into chicken/gardening grounds. Sagan already got one of my chicks last week when I first got them home. The one that got injured in the incident is fine though. Still recovering, but is also one of my bigger chicks & is a lighter grayish barred rock.

Since they're a bit cramped atm, we're hurrying to just get this enclosed to get them some more room while we build out the raised garden bed.

I'm going to hang their feeders and waterers from hooks. This might be such a great chicken run/coop that I might let some of my bigger chickens use it, or use it to house Lenny to give my laying hens a break. Lol.

BR pullets and cockerels alike have a light spot on their head. The spot on the girls tends to be more compact and clear; the male headspot tends to be more spreading and to have dark down flecks in it - but this is usually only about 80% - 90% accurate.

The Yakima Kid- thanks. I only have 3 br chicks, but one is much smaller than any other of my chicks.

One of the white chicks is a meanie, keeping my eye on it, it'll go into time out cage in the run to rethink doing that.

Now my brooder boxes are empty of peep peeps.

They do seem to take to grass and dandelion leaves already, they will be tasty when it's time for them to go to freezer camp. :) in 8-9 weeks, I'm thinking they are 5 weeks old today there about.

Has anyone else done dp for meat?

I made a great angel food cake the other day and posted the recipe here in byc. I'm thinking I might visit my friend's flock today and bring her chocolate idiot cake.

I love that these 2 recipes use a lot of eggs. ( 1.5 c egg whites for angel food cake and 5 eggs for idiot cake.) What better thing on a Sunday than cake and coffee, after chicken chores?

Idiot cake? Did you post the recipe? Where? That sounds delicious.
By the way, does anyone have a recipe for a chocolate cake that uses coffee? I remember making it right in the baking pan and making three holes to put the liquids in. I think they were oils and coffee. Somehow the recipe was lost. Would love to have it again. It was so rich and moist.

I am going to make a thread/post about the chocolate idiot cake, it's crazy simple, dense, decadent, rich. Like eating a wedge of chocolate truffle/ganache, and very few ingredients. If that kind of stuff is appealing to anyone ;)

Glad they are out because they were filling up that brooder box! We should start a thread about recipes that use lots of eggs.

My mother in law asked me about chickens yesterday. She asked if they were laying yet. I told her no, but soon. She asked if I was going to throw the first several eggs away?

I probably gave her a rude look and said, "NO!! Why would I do that?!!" I've been waiting so long on these eggs that question just took me by surprise and brought out a strong reaction lol. Her reasoning was to not eat them until the chicken gets all the kinks worked out. Is this some old wives tale? Something people used to do back in the day? The first time I find an egg I will probably run screaming into the house, call the family together, scramble the egg and divide it into 4 tiny bites and demand they all have their bite right away.

Throw them away...

I took my first eggs and blew them out, taking the insides and scrambling them. Then I took the scrambled egg and shared it with my girl who laid it!

Maybe if it were soft shelled or some other weird thing, I wouldn't eat them, but I'd still feed them back to the girls.
