Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

No offense taken, you didn't have all the facts. And I am actually cynical too because i know that any animal my family fancies will be my responsibility eventually because I am a stay at home mom. And my daughter is doing so much more than I ever dreamed of in high school it's crazy, she has a full plate!

You know, the girl had just 6 pullets and 3 ducks when we she started. Like you, I have expanded the flock to the astronomical level it is today. And i have 2 broodies with Cream Legbar chicks and an incubator full of Cream Legbar eggs.....I believe i may be obsessed!

Me too!

Who simply looses interest in chickens? They aren't even very hard to take care of.

A teacher/coach here at the school just got rid of his 5 chickens b/c he doesn't have the time to care for them and no one else at home will. <sigh> Why are people so darn lazy??

"I don't cook"
"I don't iron"
"I don't wash cars"
"I don't garden"
etc

We've inherited most of our dogs and cats from grown kids who realized they didn't want to or couldn't take care of them.

I don't mind because I love animals and we have plenty of room, but it would be nice if they asked before getting an animal if I would be willing to take it if they couldn't keep it. I just don't have the heart to say "take it to the pound" or whatever...

My reply involved ADULTS!
To make the story even more unbelievable, the owners with the frozen water problem came back in the spring and wanted to know if they could have their chickens back!
Imagine their horror when I told them I butchered and ate the hens. (Because of biosecurity issues.) After going back home, they called me again to see if they could buy more hens!
Enola: You have the patience of a saint to deal with such unbelievable people. I certainly hope you didn't sell them any more birds. No doubt these are the same type of people who would get their children a kitten at the beginning of the summer, then dump it out in the country in the fall when school starts. Or get the chicks, ducks, or baby rabbits for the Easter baskets, only to dump them when they realize that these little critters poop!!!

I have a 15 yr. old teenager that loses interest easily.... Boy Scouts/Order of the Arrow Indian Dancing (I sewed his costume in colors he wanted - I even researched ideas to bring in my Indian heritage (I'm 1/32 so it's kind of far back LOL) for designs on his regalia) and he doesn't want to dance anymore much less work on the $200 worth of dyed turkey feathers for his bustle). Scout Merit Badges are not being completed. Band in 6th grade, he quit after a few weeks and didn't tell us (he just stopped going and started getting Fs in the class-why the teacher didn't contact me I still haven't figured out). He has ducks this year but who has to nag him to feed them? *I* have to let them out in the morning and often close them up at night. He is wanting to do the school's Trap Shooting this fall and Golf in the spring. (His grandmother has a friend that is selling/giving up his golf clubs so she's doing that but I wonder if he will stick with it since his track record is not so good).

I don't think there's anything wrong with the summer chicken thing, as long as your ready to butcher them in fall, or have a place for them to go to (all set up before getting the chickens). Around here, chicken keeping is starting to become popular, I'm thinking about hatching some chicks and renting them out for the summer (people are actually willing to pay to take care of and feed your chickens over the summer), and then just send them to freezer camp in fall.

A 25-year-old woman sees all the eggs I have on my kitchen counter. She looks at them and says: "So many eggs! Too bad you will have to throw them out"
Me: "Throw them all out? Why is that?"
Her: "Well, you only have a few chickens and their periods are once a month, so your eggs must be very old and not suitable for consumption."
Me: "

I take a deep breath and explain to her how chickens are different from humans. And I didn't resist telling my family the whole episode. We laughed so hard we had tears in our eyes.

Sometimes I feel like not educating people b/c I'll run out of things to post once in a while
