I can also grow food but my two guys at home picky at what they will eat. hubby hunts so skinning n cleaning are covered. also have collection of wood burners ,some heat some heat n cook. been without power a week before, bust out candles n oil lamps n board games.

I crochet (stuffed animals, hats, fingerless gloves, blankets, and various other items I need), draw, do photography, papercrafts (Among other things, I make packaging for my handicrafts), polymer clay items (novelty jewelry, figurines, and details for my stuffed animals.)

I also write, grow my own veggies and herbs, and of course, keep chickens.  I have several other hobbies, but they are too numerous to mention.

When I described my activities to a new acquaintance, he asked in shock, "Is there anything you DON'T do?" I answered without hesitation, "Make furniture!" :)

I try to keep a 24/7 webcam going in my craft room so people can see what I'm up to, and my activities have inspired quite a few people--locally and around the world--to pick up hobbies like sewing, knitting, crochet, etc. themselves.  I'm even teaching crochet classes to grade-school kids now after school.  It's pretty exciting. :)

Good for you. Your list is more extensive than mine, but I work full time and am currently in my office finishing up a psychoeducational report to present tomorrow morning. So, I, too, stay very busy both at work and at home

What I don't get is those people (of whom there are too many) who don't seem to have any hobbies. Like the woman I mentioned earlier: she doesn't cook, doesn't garden, doesn't do any handicrafts (isn't there someone you can pay to do that for you?), and says she doesn't have time to read or watch TV, so she's not up on the news. What keeps her so busy?? Running to the grocery store daily to pick up what the boys just decided they want for dinner, baking boxed brownies at 10pm for a snack for the boys, shopping, running errands, going to events and various activities, and driving her kids hither and yon. She also works in a school, but as a counselor, so she doesn't have to write reports like I do. Beats the living daylights out of me how she stays so busy.

I don't get it either. I feel like to solve this mystery I should dress in khakis and hide in the bushes with a pair of binoculars, observing the habits of Americanus normalus, commonly referred to as "The Normies". If the people I know are any indication, she probably spends her time cruising facebook on her smart phone.

One comment I hear a lot when I show someone my work is "Wow, you've got too much free time". I'm like, no, this is my job. This is why I have no free time... They really don't understand that being a self employed artist doesn't mean I sit around on my tookus all day staring at the wall.

that's like they think homesteaders n homemakers do nothing. I work full time n have a list of hobbies that change with seasons n I do them permitting I can walk with my back issue, degenerative disk disease is a big factor for me

So as I am a recovering cancer patient I have decided to go back to my roots so to speak we did a summer garden had great success until it flooded then lost a lot but we also have 30 chickens that I raise for eggs even my children won't tough store bought eggs now. They say they are gross. My kids helped work the garden from start to finish and love eating the food we grew I had long ago forgotten what my grandparents taught me but I am teaching my kids now

Someone summed it up pretty good earlier... Normies have so little imagination that they literally can't imagine that anyone does anything differently than them. When they are home, they are not at work, therefore anyone who "works" at home must not be working either. Since they have never experienced what we do, they simply cannot fathom it.

If I ever fulfill my dream of having a proper homestead farm, I have every intention of inviting local schools for field trips and tours and putting in cabins that guests can stay in to experience that lifestyle for themselves. How great would it be to have folks come out and spend a week or a weekend learning how to can jams and jellies, crochet or sew, or take care of livestock?

PC, are you SURE you aren't related to me? It's too bad you're in Kansas! Me and the other half would love to do the same! Or rent some of the cabins out as 'artist retreat' spaces.

Was trying to rate the above statement but got a warning that I am over my allowed limit for rating hahahhahaa, I guess I must like things on here a lot. I too would love a few little cabins dotted around the place for folks to come and stay over

We are half way there. We have a large 50+ acre piece of property to start our "back to basics" living style, where we can raise chickens, have a garden, and live as efficiently as possible.
We just purchased this property complete with a rustic cabin. We moved chickens there only to find out that we are not allowed to raise any type of farm animals, and all buildings must have prior township permission.
We have been fighting ordinance officers for "violating ordinances" since August, and we just got the property in May!
I guess this is the theme of the thread... Dumb things people say about chickens/eggs/meat...
DUMBEST thing people can say... "You can't have chickens on your own private property on 50+ acres"
