Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

We are half way there. We have a large 50+ acre piece of property to start our "back to basics" living style, where we can raise chickens, have a garden, and live as efficiently as possible.
We just purchased this property complete with a rustic cabin. We moved chickens there only to find out that we are not allowed to raise any type of farm animals, and all buildings must have prior township permission.
We have been fighting ordinance officers for "violating ordinances" since August, and we just got the property in May!
I guess this is the theme of the thread... Dumb things people say about chickens/eggs/meat...
DUMBEST thing people can say... "You can't have chickens on your own private property on 50+ acres"

That's pretty darn stupid, all right. Is the county argument that chickens will bother the neighbors? With 50+ acres, how close can a neighbor be? :th

"Chickens are vegetarians."

THIS ONE is actually getting on my nerves because of a rather famous chicken company... TYSON.

They've got their commercials up now saying they meet all of the standards set by the Dept. of Agriculture, but also go the extra mile like "ensuring our chickens are fed a vegetarian diet..."

So now we have the largest name-brand chicken meat producer in this country telling the public THE WRONG THING. And it's all over TV. I can't tell you how many times I've seen it during one episode of NCIS on the USA network. CHICKENS ARE NOT VEGETARIANS!! They eat meat, they NEED meat, and feeding them only veggies is part of the reason store-bought meat and eggs lack so many nutrients these days!

I get a little more mad every time I see that commercial, wondering how many people will actually believe it now.

.... And then I walk out back and see one of my five-month-old sumatras happily carrying a now-dead vole in her beak, and running from the others around her that want it. I'm glad I have my own source of eggs!

Ok, that is just ironically stoopid. Why on earth feed chickens VEGETARIAN feeds......when the people consuming the birds....are NOT vegetarian....obviously. People who eat chicken....ARE meat eaters!! Meat eaters...EAT MEAT!! Helloooo????

Makes me wonder who does their marketing research.....

It sounded good, so they went with it. They probably feed their chickens vegetarian diets because it's cheaper for them somehow, and decided to make that sound like a positive spin. Like with most advertising and politics, it has nothing to do with reality--just with what sounds best.

There's been some stuff about byproducts and other interesting things making their way into chicken feed, so that may have something to do with it.

If it makes you guys feel any better though, I fall into Gen Y, and I've got more "old-school" hobbies than I know what to do with, including chickens. A sewing machine (electric) is on my wishlist this year because I'm tired of not having one, and a treadle is on my wishlist for sometime soon. I've been stuck hand stitching things, and sometimes that just doesn't quite cut it. I call myself the crazy chicken lady, I might as well own it. I think a few people at work think I'm a little crazy. Chickens, acreage, a barn just waiting for critters. They don't get it. I love it though. I've always wanted a little mini-farm. I'm just glad my husband is on the same page as me (Also a Gen Y)! So there are still a few of us who aren't completely hopeless! We're both still learning lots, but we're doing it together.

You got that right! The advertisers ain't stupid ... they know who they're dealing with and selling to; the General Public! Or, as a previous poster so beautifully put it, "Americanus normalus, commonly referred to as 'The Normies'".

See Bell Curve below to see where most of them fall:

Well, if it is any consolation to the "Americanus normalus" who are purchasing those "vegetarian" chickens.......how many of those same poultry producers will be sending those birds to China for processing. (?) If the vegetarian fed poultry is a small enough operation, promoting themselves as "organic".... (Def not Tyson), then one would think they would be feeding protein also. Real, creepy crawlie, with eyeballs.....protein! One shudders to think what Chinese processed poultry will be introducing into our already contaminated food system. Lead? Arsenic? Melamine? I am sure they have more in their arsenal.
Sorry....I must just be confused...

I know the food chain is already contaminated by questionable feeding processes....i.e. feeding cattle the composted chicken manure...feeding cattle and chickens the leftovers ground up of their processing plants. Etc. It's not the marketing professionals who are stupid....no..they are laughing all the way to the bank. Just look at how many of our fellow consumers who have no idea of where their food comes from...let alone what happens to it to get to their tables.

I refuse to purchase store bought chicken anymore. We have just done without for a while now.
