Yes it is sad to think. I know if anyone takes the initiative to learn something they can.. but having someone who has already has the expertise to groom knowledge from is worth more than gold in my opinion. I self taught myself a lot of things.. and am now motivating others. We have this sense of need and accomplishment when we do such thins... Oh and I totally agree with the gas stove! It is a must! I have had both being in the service and having to rent and move so much. Gas is 'da balm' Age puh.. I am well under 40 and I knew this when I was in my early 20's when electric was the popular thing. LOL if it happens again say... "Well if age is wisdom and beauty.... You best be lucky to catch up with me bub."

My kids will know the skills too. My husband is teaching himself how to build and gleaming then knowledge from my dad when he can. But we live 14 hours apart. I am still working on sewing. I can patch anything.. but patterns *shudder* I just need to break ground then hopefully it will get easier and I can make my kids own clothes.

I crochet (stuffed animals, hats, fingerless gloves, blankets, and various other items I need), draw, do photography, papercrafts (Among other things, I make packaging for my handicrafts), polymer clay items (novelty jewelry, figurines, and details for my stuffed animals.)

I also write, grow my own veggies and herbs, and of course, keep chickens. I have several other hobbies, but they are too numerous to mention.

When I described my activities to a new acquaintance, he asked in shock, "Is there anything you DON'T do?" I answered without hesitation, "Make furniture!" :)

I try to keep a 24/7 webcam going in my craft room so people can see what I'm up to, and my activities have inspired quite a few people--locally and around the world--to pick up hobbies like sewing, knitting, crochet, etc. themselves. I'm even teaching crochet classes to grade-school kids now after school. It's pretty exciting. :)

Awesome.. yea people ask "How do you do all that..?" Me. "Um I just do it..." Homeschooling though does take u time but the kids are picking up in other areas now so I can get more done.. It was tough when they were 6 and under. But now my gerls are 7-8 they can do more chores "Yay" the 4 year old is still a challenge.. but on days when his dad is home he;s out there with him and that makes my life easier.

Keep it up BTW. People need to be motivated by those of us classified as the 'ant'.

Quote: Same same... if mine catch a mouse which they do occasionally it's fun to watch the racing around the yard as they strive to keep their prize. I've also seen many a gecko not be quick enough to get away from my hens and end up as dinner. Snails, slugs, insects, moths, flies... all meat and they LOVE it

Mine are veggie fed, non GMO/Organic, but if they naturally get meat insects or whatever is in their natural diets that's fine. I don;t feed them chicken or large animal meats.. It doesn't suit the natural diet of the animal. But their primary source of proteins are grasses and insects. so I don't feed them meat intentionally. Fish is another source of protein I let them have, since it is something they could access when they often hang by streams in the wild for a water supply. they'd get the ones that washes up or then little guys that swim in the shallows. so far the cats have had priority on the rodents nor do my chickens pack at any of the ones that have dies in their pen. They leave the carcass be. Chickens will eat about anything.. but it doesn't mean that they 'should'. Just because you throw it in the pen. That's my take on the subject. :p

Yeah the mantis, lizards, and frogs seem to know to stay away form the coop LOL Buthte cats are just as bad with those.. but they don't like Thadeus my toad.

I have an idiot roommate, (53 year old midwestern male) who was going out to the backyard to use my bbq. When he saw my chickens playing across the yard in the bushes, he asked me if my girls were going to attack him. He followed up his question with the statement, "I will defend and protect myself as necessary". Very very very strange dude.

That is so funny!

My sister is scared of chickens. She hesitated to touch one of my Hens but finally did. She said: She is so soft!

My mom laughed and said Haven't you ever heard of "Soft as a feather bed"? Where do you think the feathers came from?

"Maybe he was making an excuse for a quick chicken BBQ? :p

That's really my point though. Normally, chickens get a "meat" source out in the wild. It may be insects. Or it could be small lizards, mice, voles, snakes, frogs, toads, insects, insect larvae, spiders, etc. I purposely buy 1,000 to 2,000 crickets at a time from Ghann's farm, and turn those loose in the pen for my birds. I also raise my own mealworms, superworms, and minnows.

But not letting them have access to any of that, is much worse than feeding them table-meats now and then as a source of protein.

Minnows? How do you raise minnows and how do you feed them to the chickens?

There is a lot of protein in alfalfa, soy, and in some grains.. but many don;t get a well rounded diet.. too much corn. I also don't feed soy. but the veggie combo they get has 22% protein, Plus having the duck buckets when I dump them they get a lot of earth worms. Meal worms are a treat.. but I thing i the wild they would get mostly greens and from a wide variety of foliage.. and in the dry season grains and more insects. they do great on that, even without meat. I also don;t have the red specks in my eggs. Flies and wasps they dine on lol. And if I find a bunch of maggots they get those.

(I was raising my own meal worms.. but the kids kept feeding them too many carrots. I ended up with all moldy mealies *sigh*

My game birds go crazy over a lizard. Worse than chicken crack!

It's like catnip to chickens hahahahahaha. However as yet they haven't realised that inside a bobtail lizard is MEAT... yet! You should see mine behead a giant centipede, the stinging kind. First time I saw it happen I panicked as they deliver a really nasty sting/bite but one quick swish and it was beheaded hahahahah then eaten whole
