Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Haha so last night after we finished discussing how nasty ( or delicious to some people) boxed mac&cheese is, I sat down for dinner and there right in front of me was a huge pot of that mac&cheese. I couldn't help but laughing and everyone stared at me like I was insane. I didn't eat it of course.

Oh, sure. You say you didn't eat it. How could you resist? Delicious bits of noodle floating in a sea of cheese food. Yum!

My niece was visiting last week, taking a break from her nomad travels. She was telling me that she can't wait to get back to South America, where food is real. She says she can't stand eggs from the United States, but loves them, and can't get enough of them in SA. She also stated that the eggs in the stores there are not refrigerated. She's even sophisticated enough to tell me that an unwashed egg is less likely to be a cause of human infection. Smart girl!

If only the majority of our youth today were as smart as she!

I think you will be hard pressed to find a female that ONLY ovulates with a male present.

Edited to say: I stand corrected by the above post... Hmmm... the things you never knew you didn't know...

I would inform them that "that word" is a BAD word. In fact they made a comercial about it that included racial slurs! I couldn't believe it!
But my point is... that word offends more people than you alone and it is just one more that should not be said. EVER...
I have had a few pets that were a little bit special, so I know where you are coming from.

Also, rabbits only ovulate once the male has bred her. It's called induced ovulation. It's not that silly or stupid to assume that chickens could be the same way u less you happen to already have knowledge about factory farmed hens and eggs. Making an egg takes q lot of resources to make. Induced ovulation would make sense from a survival perspective, but fortunately for us it is not how chickens do things.

Marketing - Marketing - Marketing
It's awesome what a few chickens can teach you when you are willing to get your hands dirty and work. Dirty hands equal clean coops.
As a former city kid I also thought brown eggs were healthier. When they were first introduced to our grocery store they were labeled as "farm" and "fresh". Cartoons of chickens sitting on straw filled nests adorned the boxes. (not chickens stacked on top each other in cages) We really felt like we were getting something different and because it was fresh, it MUST be healthier!
After working in some food processing plants and finding out how the only difference in some butters - between the generic brand and the high dollar brand was the label on the box, I started to wise up.
I also learned there is no "butter" in most of them. It's flavored oil.
Marketing has a terrible influence on they way food tastes. The brain is a powerful influence on tastebuds. Cartoon pictures must taste good!
I homestead now and we grow, process and store 90% of all our food.
I have shared my farm foods with my family only to receive disappointing feedback. I kept trying, offering, being "so very generous" and sharing just to realize that if they aren't educated in the work, health benefits and the labor involved - they will never "get it".
Perhaps no one "tastes the pride" in what I do… but it happens to be my favorite flavor in each and every dish.
It has taken me 5 years to quit trying to rope my friends and family into the "real" side. I'm tired of getting my feelings hurt and it's not worth giving my hard work away to people who just don't appreciate it. It's a shame. I'm thankful that I can come here and post with people who have the same experiences. I always feel like I am doing something awesome sharing - and they Just. Don't. Get it.
There is so much independence, glory and pride in poultry. Don't beat yourself up trying to convert food zombies. They will come clamoring when they get sick (like I did) or when food gets too expensive… until then… enjoy yourself! Eat up! Your the chef who knows ALL of the ingredients!!
margarine. Do you know how it came to be? It was originally formulated as an industrial feed for factory farmed turkeys. Well, when they fed it to the turkeys, they all DIED. So they have all this left over by-product, what to do with it? Add food coloring and flavoring and chemicals and !market it for HUMAN consumption...oh and tell them it's "healthier" than butter! But first we must make natural fat the enemy (come to find out it's healthier to eat full-fat rather than low fat or no fat alternatives!)

Edit: further research has found this to be false. Sorry for propagating a lie! Either way, margarine is so bad for you. Anything that says "partially hydrogenated" anything oil is incredibly bad for your whole system.

You can't be serious. No one would intentionally poison us and tell us it's healthy...Would they...? I'm seriously freaking out now. That is terrifying, especially since I had margarine for years before we switched to real butter because it's cheaper and isn't made with oil. Who knows what else might have been fed to animals with negative effects and then given to us!

I've edited my previous comment.

HM....and after even more research into it,it just seems like a propaganda war and the margarine enthusiasts are on the lying end. Healthy and safe and nutritious should not ever be in the same sentence as "margarine".
Oops, this thread is about stupid chicken comments, not the dairy substitute industry. Are eggs classified as dairy products? That always baffled me in the store as a kid.

I've never seen refrigerated eggs anywhere in Latin America or the Caribbean. They're on the shelf with the bread.
Only a couple European countries refrigerate eggs.

My kids have been all over Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia. I'm in my 60s and they're in their mid 20s and have been to more countries than I have but when they were young we took them everywhere we went. We never stayed in all inclusive resorts but with local people so I created a couple travel monsters. My daughter is in the middle of a 3 month trip to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. My son is going to Peru in June. I've never been to Asia. My son's been to Thailand and Cambodia and spent a couple months in China.

Lots of things that are in our food now are by products of animal feed. You don't expect them to just throw the junk away do you?

In fact, I don't recall seeing refrigerated milk in Mexico. It comes in a box, is on a shelf and isn't white.
