Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Now, back to chickens.

When I first got my girls, all the country folk up here were loaded with free advice about how to raise them, etc. "Why, when I was a young'n my dad had the biggest chicken farm in the area!" OR "You have 7 chickens? haw, haw, haw. What's anybody gonna do with 7 measly chickens? I had me 3000!" <me: ??????????>

As time went on, they'd say, "I ain't never heard of no fancy colored chickens like that. I thought all chickens were white, like ours!"

Or, "What's moulting? Our chickens never done that!"

Or, "Are my eggs organic? Well, these here are yard eggs."

Or, "You've gotta burn their beaks so they won't eat each other!"

After scratching my head for awhile, and after hanging out here at BYC and learning a little bit about the topic, I finally figured out that most of these folks had only raised meaties in those huge commercial chicken factories and knew NOTHING about laying hens. A few of the others had "yard chickens" (is that similar to a yard/jail bird?) Shoulda seen me trying to sort all this out.

They were trying to apply their mass production rules to my backyard hobby and vice versa. No wonder the folks at the feed stores looked at me like I was nuts for wanting 1-2 bags of organic feed. Guess that's also why everyone insisted I needed a rooster for eggs. They needed some boys so they could maintain the inventory and generalized it to getting ANY eggs at all. So, now, *I'm* educating *them* about chickens!! What a hoot!

3. You should always hide and call the police instead of trying to threaten the intruders. Unless you're in Texas, it's illegal to shoot someone that didn't threaten your life. Your best bet is to grab your phone, grab your gun, go to a safe place and hide, then call the police and wait there. If you need reasons why you shouldn't confront the intruders, refer to points 1 and 2.
Not going to debate self defense tactics, but this is simply disinformation.

Most states have some form of castle doctrine that declares that anyone who has broken into your house can legally be viewed as an imminent threat to your life and treated as such.

This is one huge reason why everyone should get to know your own state laws, what one person says in another state often has no bearing on your own situation. When it comes to defending your own life, or the lives of your livestock against various types of predators, it is very important to get to know your local laws.

I have a friend who wants to get her 1st chickens this spring. She asked me "Which are the ones that lay the eggs?"

And I told her "The HENS" and she said that I would have to narrow it down for her. So funny! We'll have fun getting her set up with them for sure!

Why are you guys so intent on sucking the fun out of this thread? There are valid arguments for any side of any discussion. There are valid places to discuss them. This isn't one of those places. This is supposed to be fun. I might unsubscribe.

sorry if i knew it would cause this amount of problems i wouldn't have said anything it was suppose to be funny heck the sign is sold as a novelty for pete sakes sorry again

lol's my ma said something like that this morning. i was looking at a online chicken website trying to figure out what type of chicks i got at the feed store and i was looking at the page for the speckled sussex to which she yelled at me "you are not bringing a hawk into my house!!" I said "that's not a hawk that's a chicken." She then said "no it's not!! chickens don't look like that!!"

I did a bit more research and it turns out there are quite a few states with the Castle Doctrine. I wouldn't say "most states", though.

The states are: Alaska, Califronia, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland,
massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina
North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Arolina, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming

So if you're in one of these states, you can legally shoot someone in your house. Otherwise, I think the rest of the states (excluding some which MAY require you to not shoot), lets you shoot if you feel your life is threatened.

I don't believe anything else I said was wrong.

Also, essentially what the Castle Doctrine means is that if you see someone on your property and shoot them, you aren't going to jail. If someone breaks into your house unarmed and not threatening and you shoot them, you're not going to jail. Both of which will send you to jail in a state without this. However, as I said, in most states, if you feel like your life is in danger, you can shoot them.

Yard eggs are from hens that free range. Usually a small about of hens that were kept just for home production. But I am sure you figured this out by now lol

That is actually a very bad idea.

1. Don't tell them where you are. Unless you know where they are, that they're alone (or, in the case of two or more people, together), and you have them at gun point, don't approach them or make your presence noticeable. Just call the police.
2. They may be armed. Unfortunately, unless it's a decent slug, a shotgun round will not be lethal to them through the wall; let alone the speed at which it fires and reloading time. A FMJ round out of a semi-auto rifle will put you in immediate danger. They can just barrage you with bullets through the wall and you're dead. Again, very bad idea to let them know where you are and that you're armed.

It's best, even in these cases, to avoid unnecessary violence and call the police. Even if you had a fully auto M2 Browning (50 BMG) held to the intruder's head at point blank, you're still risking your life to prevent items from being stolen. Not worth it.
It is not illegal in all states other than TX to shoot someone that is in your home. Laws vary, but if someone is in your home they are threatening your life and you are justified. See my post below.

"And, you'd be wise to remember it." Works when they call you the B-word, too.
I have been called a B several times during my 15 years of teaching. My first year a kid carved Mrs. so and so is a B---- into the lab table. So I carved under it, "And don't you forget it!" And I had him stay in that seat the rest of the semester. Show no fear

Now as assistant principal, part time, I am sure it comes up more often. I enforce the rules every time for everyone consistently.

I, too, am dangerous with my shotgun and for a similar reason. Therefore, my self defense plan is thus: at the first sound, I grab the shot gun next to the bed and go to the top of the stairs. I then sit on the top step, resting said shotgun on knees. I then cock the gun and announce loudly, "That sound was my shotgun, and this staircase has just turned into a shooting gallery. Take one step on the stairs and I fire. I don't have to be accurate, At this range I'm gonna hit anything on the stairs." I figure that oughta do it.

Now, please. Let's not debate the merits, stupidity, impossibility, plausibility or other facets of this plan. It's MY plan and I'm sticking to it. Of course, I also live in a place that has almost no crime, so I'm not overly concerned, either.

A few years ago I was home with my toddler and my son who was about 11. It was 10 pm and nobody else was on campus either. This man pulled up and I went outside to the porch to see what was wrong (I did NOT want him to come up and my porch and neither did my normally wussy rat terrier). He asked for money for gas and I said I didn't have any. He asked if I had a lawn mower or a 4 wheeler that he could siphon some from or if he could siphon some from my truck (uh...it is a diesel). I told him to leave. He started looking in my shed, testing the doors of my truck, and kicked my dog. So I went in the house and called 911, locked the door. Cops said it wasn't an emergency. The mad started banging on my door and trying to bust it down.. My son grabbed the pump action 12 gauge for me and the rifle for him. I warned the man, racked it, and I have never seen anyone run so fast. DH had to fill in the ruts in the driveway the next day. Cops still didn't think it was an emergency. A pregnant woman, a toddler, and an 11 year old at home alone way out in the country with a man breaking down the door isn't an emergency. What if I hadn't had a gun? What if I had hidden? I think I would be raped or murdered. My sons might not be alive. Stick to your plan. Your average criminal is a wuss.

I was in East TN at a Dollar General Market while visiting family. I saw some men shoplifting. I reported them, but obviously they were friends/relatives of the employees. So I got out to my truck with my preschooler and the men were waiting on my I pulled my handgun out of my purse, checked my loads within view of them, and they left very quickly. They were there to intimidate me. But I teach high school science. I am not intimidated. Ever.

And how is someone choosing not to carry affecting you so horribly that you'd incite violence against them?

I'm done, there's no reasoning when it comes to this apparently.
I personally don't care if someone carries or not. I only care if they try to prevent ME from carrying. I carry everywhere except to work where it would be illegal (and I would be uncomfortable having a gun at school anyway), places where it is illegal, and to church.

Well, to all you out there who wanted entertaining, silly stuff about chickens, I say goodbye. Maybe we can meet up on another funny thread sometime.
Sorry. Not the first time this thread has gone off topic. We will eventually come back.

Don't tell anyone, but I hard boiled some bought eggs, and one of them was partially developed (no discernible chick, just the initial veining/branching).

It was really weird, when I opened it up, the yolk wasn't hard, it was the color of a cooked yolk, but still liquidy, molten grossness. I told my friend that I get my eggs from...she stopped selling her eggs until she gets her broodies in line.

Put me off eggs for a minute, lol.
But if I had never incubated eggs and been familiar with the process, I probably never would have even recognized that's what it was....just.."man, that egg must have been bad or something, that was WEIRD!"
A lady at church told a childrens story about cracking an egg for breakfast and finding a viable chick inside. Everyone thought it was funny. I felt like calling her egg customers and warning them.

Errr ... just how "narrow" does she want you to get?

I addressed that in a previous post. It is in fact legal to shoot someone in your house in about half the states. By that, I mean if they're in your house, even if they're unarmed and have their hands up. The other states will consider you a murderer if you just shot someone with no real reason, other then you didn't want them on your property.

I do not believe it is legal in that situation to pull out a gun as nobody's life was being threatened and it was not your property. Call 911 and leave.
