Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I read a ckunkily-written "news" story where it was speculated that the blue egg gene in chickens might be a virus induced mutation ... If that is indeed how the first blue egg chicken breeds happened many years ago, then it's right up there with with the virus that causes striped tulips as "cool" viruses in my opinion. But the author/reporter didn't make it clear it isn't a disease, which is irresponsible, IMO.

I thought the tulip virus does cause a problem for the plant?

the whole "you're gonna eat them" think/joke does get kind of old. Why would you eat something that gives you more food by being alive? They know they are girl chickens.

Personally I see nothing wrong with those who raise their chickens (or other animals) for food (and I don't see the issue with eating animals like cats, dogs, horses or other animals that are often considered pets.) Now if we're talking stealing someone's pet and eating it (regardless of species) then that's a huge no-no.

I agree. There's nothing wrong with eating animals you raise. But you don't eat pets. One of my (many) mottos: if it has a name, it is not food.
I was at pet expo (a sort of miniature county fair with pets everywhere.) and we had our chickens in cages to show people. These people with dogs kept putting their dogs in front of the cages and saying, "look! Lunch!" It got me sooooo mad I was ready to punch them in the face. Oh sure, it's alright if you threaten my pets, I'll just get my dog and tell her to eat your cat.

Researchers at the University of Nottingham, UK and in China have recently reported on genetic findings that tell us that the blue colored chicken eggs highly favored by some food gourmands happen because of a retrovirus. The retrovirus that causes blue eggs is harmless and enters the DNA of chickens which causes the blue pigment biliverdin to be deposited on egg shells. I'm sure they're just joking around. I know my mum would be the type to say something like that but I know she only does it for jokes (though she's no vegetarian.) I do find it hypocritical when people say stuff like that and then get whiny if you joke around about having cat or dog soup.

Or you could say "I've heard they eat dogs in Korea, I guess eating pets is a "cultural thing" that we aren't meant to understand".

Precisely. For a dog lover to contemplate farming dogs for consumption is a very close analogy to how someone who has pet chickens views the broiler industry. I am not all that bothered by either type of "farming", or even eating horsemeat, but I completely understand the feelings of those who are bothered by all that. We all draw the line somewhere, I think it would be informative to those dog owners to have their perspective broadened to understand how their comments could be hurtful.

But really, my comment was in jest, I think it could be dangerous to actually make the comment (some people feel their opinions are worth defending with violence), but perfectly safe to think it.
