lol's yeah i love it i never did understand why it's so hard for people to understand that i want to "know" my meat personally

but i don't mind giving my meat birds nicknames they are just as much my babys as any layer i may have even though they will be in the oven soon just because they will be my food doesn't mean i shouldn't care for and love them any less.

I have to say that I'm still somewhat of a hypocrite when it comes to this issue.

I can't yet get to the point where I'm comfortable butchering my own meat, but I do buy from local sources where I have seen the environment that the chickens live in.

I'm trying to work my way to the point where I can be comfortable raising my own meat. It's a process and I admire those of you who can do it. You give your chickens a good life and honor them. I buy all of my meat from local sources now, and do want to be self sustaining at some point. I know there's nothing wrong with it and feel dumb for being such a coward.

don't worry it isn't a "overnight" thing it took me quite literally years to be comfortable with killing my own meat and i still to this day can't touch a cull chicken with my bare hands i HAVE to be wearing my rubber gloves or the cull doesn't happen that day. Some people just can't bring themselves to do the deed and that's OK too because it should never be that easy to brush aside your conscience besides their are people like me willing to help people like you out

So true!

I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate the people who are willing to take on the responsibility for feeding those of us who are too puny minded to do it.

I do want to be able to get there at some point, but I'm not there yet and I will own it!

It can take some time.

There is a support thread for processing right here on BYC. Go there for help and inspiration.

Thanks!

I know it will take time, if I ever even get there. I've spent so much of my time rescuing animals and trying to make a really good life for the animals I have that I just never thought about what it would be like to end that life. It really is a process and, you're right, it takes time.

I've been a rescuer as well, so I know exactly what you feel like! Our local producers are in short supply, so I've used the inhumane conditions at factory farms as a catalyst for ordering our first batch of meat birds later this summer. I'm on that thread that was mentioned. Lots of good advice, plus you can always raise them and pay to have them processed! :)

Actually she's very intelligent and loves meat. An English teacher and translator here in UA.

She's like most folks though and has never seen meat that didn't have a styrofoam tray and plastic wrap. Although here its common to buy "home chicken" from street market vendors (pensioners). Most women from this part of the globe also have a very deep affection for animals of all types. They're also mostly city girls. The ones from the smaller "ag" villages tend to be more practical about it.

My wife (an RN/NP) will adjust just fine. Being extremely health conscious these girls can also be persuaded if I use the non GMO angle. Wifey also claims that she'll never eat rabbit if I butcher them. I've actually decided to not raise rabbits in favor of the more omnivorous and thus easier/cheaper to feed, chicken.

"Coward" is not a word that would apply, here. Sensitive would be more appropriate, and there's no shame in that. I'm going to have my current layers culled in the fall, making way for my new layers. However, there's no way I could do that myself, so I'm taking them to someone who will do it for me. He's reported to be very humane. I will take home birds that have already been processed, taking the "familiar faces" issue out of it.

That's true, I hadn't thought of having someone else do the processing. Thanks very much.

The chickens we have right now are pets, I didn't get them with the idea of eating them, so they will never be a meal for us. We have talked about getting some in the future that might work for that, if I can ever get past the idea of it. I just have a feeling that once I get them here and take care of them it will be very difficult to do.

Thank you. You're right, it's not cowardly. If I ever get to the point of actually being able to eat them, I will most likely have to have someone else do it.
