Castoreum is the flavoring from the beaver anal glands. You'll never want to eat anything with natural vanilla (or some fruit) flavored items. It is listed as natural flavoring.

Castoreum is used as an ingredient when making flavoring.

If a label says 'Flavored' that means its a fake. Manufactured to sort of resemble the real thing. If the label says vanilla or natural vanilla it comes from real vanilla beans.

They can list castoreum as a natural ingredient in vanilla flavoring. But can't list vanilla flavoring as a natural ingredient in something like ice cream.

How is it more cost effective to farm beavers for their anal excretions than growing vanilla.... Or are they hunted maybe? Still sounds easier just to grow vanilla... One more thing who licked a beavers anus to figure out it tasted like vanilla in the first place.....

Ok they are not farmed.... They are trapped.
Primarily in Ontario and fetch a price between 10-40 dollars, or at least so says wikapidia.

I would imagine a farmed beaver would only let the essence harvester get near him once.... Could be problematic.

At the vet clinic the better half used to work at, they sometimes got patients who wanted to harvest dog semen for breeding purposes. Who got to do the actual harvesting was always a rock, paper, scissors sort of deal...

@lazy gardener Yeah, I think so too. With some breeds the natural route isn't always an option though. But still, people insist on breeding these things that aren't able to reproduce anymore due to excessive selective breeding.
